CELEBRATE SAFELY: TRICK-OR-TREATING TIPS FOR THE COMMUNITY
As Halloween approaches, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne is dedicated to ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all. Below are some important trick-or-treating safety tips for our community.
Trick-or-Treating Safety Tips:
• Ensure children are accompanied by an adult.
• Dress in light colours and wear reflective bands.
• Carry a flashlight to see clearly and increase your own visibility.
• Glow sticks are a great way to help children stand out after dark.
• Plan a trick-or-treating route in advance and share it with parents.
• Approach houses in groups; ring doorbells or knock from outside.
• Keep a safe distance from unfamiliar animals.
• Limit running across roads; cross streets only at designated intersections.
• Always check candy with parents before eating.
Please note that the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service (AMPS) will enforce the Curfew By-Law on Halloween night. The curfew for youth under 16 will be in effect from 11:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. to ensure the safety of our youth and community.
Wishing everyone a healthy, safe, and happy Halloween! 🎃

In 2020, Akwesasne artist Joe King collaborated with CBSA to create a special shirt design for Orange Shirt Day, which now coincides with the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The design, featuring a child’s hand cradled in that of an adult, is surrounded by imagery representing First Nations, Inuit and Métis cultures.
We encourage community members to wear their own orange shirts on September 30 to honour the survivors of Residential Schools and to remember those who never returned home.
For those who want to learn more about Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, here is some information:
ORANGE SHIRT DAY
Orange Shirt Day is observed on September 30 to recognize and support the children who survived the Indian Residential School system and to remember those who did not. The day was inspired by Phyllis Webstad, a Survivor who shared her story of having her new orange shirt taken away on her first day at residential school when she was just 6 years old.
Wearing an orange shirt on this day symbolizes the reclaiming of cultural identity and acknowledges the injustices and experiences of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit children at Residential Schools.
NATIONAL DAY FOR TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION
Also recognized on September 30, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation was first observed in 2021. It was established following the confirmation of unmarked graves at the Kamloops Indian Residential School, although Survivors have long shared their stories of abuse and loss.
This day is an opportunity to honour Survivors, deepen our understanding of the Residential School system's impact, and for individuals to support ongoing efforts toward truth and reconciliation.
I hope we can recreate the Kevin falling with a big pot of chili moment in VR 😅
