We have a new spot to visit, Beaufort South Carolina.

Congratulations to Beaufort, South Carolina, where a new monument to Harriet Tubman was unveiled yesterday – on the 161st anniversary of the Combahee Raid. Created by sculptor Ed Dwight, the 14-foot sculpture features scenes depicting slaves rushing toward their escape and refuge in 1863. The monument is the very first in the state marking Tubman’s daring mission in June 1863 along the Combahee River. She became the first woman to lead a major military operation during the Civil War when she and 150 African American Union soldiers rescued more than 700 slaves in the Combahee Ferry Raid.

I ❤️🖤💚 this Harriet Tubman piece by Bisa Butler. If you don't know who the famous artist Bisa is...Google her immediately because believe it or not, this is not a painting, it is a quilt. 🥰

I Go To Prepare A Place For You

Bisa Butler, an artist who uses textiles and quilting to share stories of African American history and culture, used Benjamin Powelson's portrait of Tubman from the Howland Album to recreate her vibrancy and strength. The quilt’s symbolism displays Tubman's need to conceal herself, her personality, and to express her religious beliefs.

A mural of Harriet Tubman, reaching out to the viewer through a gap in a brick wall, with a boat to freedom on the other side.

The mural featuring the powerful image of Tubman is attracting attention from around the country, with some people moved to tears.

On the side of the Harriet Tubman Museum & Educational Center (Stop #5 on the Tubman Byway road trip), the mural shows Tubman with her hand outstretched, beckoning the viewer to join her on a journey to freedom. The mural, “Take My Hand,” was painted by Michael Rosato, an artist who lives in Dorchester County, Maryland, where Tubman was born and lived in slavery for more than 25 years.
