The housing crisis on the South Shore 04/11/2020

Lisa Ryan: “All of rural Nova Scotia is having this issue. It’s not just the South Shore. But because we’re not unified, because we’re all small pockets of people everywhere, we’re not heard like an urban centre is. That really discredits the crisis that’s happening here. The hardest thing I’ve heard is moms who have said “I grew up here, I want my kids to grow up here, I have a right to live here, and I can’t because I can’t find anything.” That, to me, is heartbreaking because they’re not able to stay where they love. That speaks to what happens when we allow housing to become a for-profit venture without ensuring that housing remains regulated, that there are penalties for ridiculous rent increases or evictions, for discriminatory practices. That we have these rules in place because housing is a human right. People deserve to have access to safe, adequate, affordable housing no matter where they are. That includes rural Nova Scotia.”

The housing crisis on the South Shore It's like in the urban areas, but it's hidden.

MARY JANE HAMPTON: Nova Scotia dead last in Public Health spending — and not just by a little bit | SaltWire 03/08/2020

"Nova Scotia has gone from 5.5 percent of its health-care expenditures for Public Health in 1975 to 1.8 percent today"

Our province is dead last in public health spending in Canada.

Take some time today and thank those around you who have pushed for a public inquiry.

Those who attended protests, wrote to politicians, and simply made their anger known to others are the reason why there will be answers as to what led up to the mass murders and how to improve public safety going forward.

This is a victory certainly and we celebrate all of you who worked for transparency and accountability.

However, this is not the end, the public inquiry was not enacted by the goodness of any politician's heart, and the question of why it took 3 months and the strongest outpouring of public anger in my lifetime for our representatives to do the right thing remains unanswered.

As we face that question, and all other questions of justice we must remember how this victory was achieved, and we must always be prepared to stand arm in arm with one another for what is right.

Protests in two Nova Scotia locations over mass shooting review decision 27/07/2020

"Meanwhile, in Bridgewater, N.S., organizer Desiree Gordon estimated about 100 people marched to the riding office of Justice Minister Mark Furey, joined by the provincial Progressive Conservative and NDP leaders."

Protests in two Nova Scotia locations over mass shooting review decision HALIFAX — Hundreds of people gathered at a Halifax park and in the riding of Nova Scotia's justice minister today to demand a public inquiry into the April mass shooting that killed 22 people in the province.

27/07/2020

‪Here in Bridgewater and throughout the province, people are justifiably outraged by the Liberal government’s decision to not call a public inquiry into the mass shooting of April 18-19. We have called for an emergency sitting of the legislature to address this matter.

Minister Mark Furey is failing Nova Scotians - Nova Scotia Advocate 26/07/2020

“Having grown up in Lunenburg West, we are keenly aware that it is the votes of our district that keep Minister Furey in power.

“In solidarity with the victims’ families, members of our community have organized a protest outside Mark Furey’s constituency office at 11 am this Monday, July 27. We’ll be there. The victims, the families of the victims, and all Nova Scotians deserve a full public inquiry into the Portapique shooting.”

Minister Mark Furey is failing Nova Scotians - Nova Scotia Advocate Jarod Campbell and Sid Kondapuram: "What would a public inquiry conclude about Minister Furey's former employer, the RCMP? Why did he ignore the reality of racist street checks until Dr. Wortley released his report? Why hasn’t he issued an apology to Glen Assoun for his wrongful conviction? Why is...

Nova Scotia Needs a Public Inquiry into Mass Shooting 24/07/2020

This morning NS NDP Leader Gary Burrill wrote to Premier McNeil to call for an emergency sitting of the legislature. Please consider signing this petition to get MLAs back in the House so that our caucus can put forward legislation to create a public inquiry in place of the review panel.

Nova Scotia Needs a Public Inquiry into Mass Shooting Support the NDP's call to convene an emergency sitting of the provincial legislature to establish a public inquiry into Nova Scotia's mass shooting.

24/07/2020

We've written to the Premier calling for an emergency sitting of the legislature in order to establish a public inquiry into the mass shooting of April 18-19.

The NDP Caucus is calling for the Liberal government to change course and call a public inquiry instead of the Independent Review Panel announced this week.

During an emergency sitting, the NDP would table legislation to create a public inquiry in place of the review panel.

Not having a public inquiry into the mass murders is a disservice to victims’ families, the public, and common sense 24/07/2020

The families of 22 innocent victims deserve a full public inquiry into the mass shooting. Period.

During the conference announcing there were no plans to launch a public inquiry journalist Paul Wells asked Mark Furey who had asked for a review instead of a public inquiry.

The answer Mark Furey gave: "No one".

The follow up question is clear. If this review is not for the victims' families, is not for those concerned about public safety and accountability, then who is it for?

We echo the earlier statement made by Gary Burrill. The government is mistaken in taking any action less than a fully empowered and fully public inquiry into the events during and preceding the mass shooting of April 18th and 19th.
