What a fun afternoon with the Pipets camp! Thank you so much for having me in! ๐จ๐โ๏ธ
Posted โข Having a fabulous week in Pipets! Today we had Dr Brittany MacDonald-MacAulay from visit to teach us about building design. We designed towers and houses, and tested them to see how well they could stand up to wind. Thank you Brittany!! ๐ฌ๐ข
Want to know whatโs happening in research? ๐ฑ A new publication in Waste and Biomass Valorization with Dr. Brittany MacDonald-MacAulay as first author. This work was done in collaboration with Port Hawkesbury Paper. Full article available through Springer Nature.
Take a look!
So exciting to see our class sizes growing in the department. Reminiscing about the first year design project poster fair, as pictured here. So much creativity; I canโt wait to see what this yearโs class come up with in collaboration with Service Learning!
A couple of our awesome engineering students and a graduate are shown today at Port Hawkesbury Paper. Left to right, Taylor MacIsaac and Todd Sampson are summer students working at PHP, and Gabriel Cozzi, recent St.FX graduate, is conducting summer research with Dr. Brittany MacDonald-MacAulay and PHP! Brittany and Gabriel were on site today to set up some trials.
Great work everyone!
Throwing it back to November when the Engineering Design and Graphics class visited the Machine Shop and learned about various tools such as the 3D printers from Steve Macdonald, Senior Machinist and Design Specialist. Many of the groups worked further with Steve to create 3D models for their design projects. ๐๏ธโ๏ธ๐จ๐ช Thank you Steve!
What a fun day at Mayfest!
A few more fabulous faces at graduation!! ๐๐

As a professor at StFX, she was one of the first engineers Iโve met and hearing about her industry experience gave me valuable insight into what a career in engineering could look like, particularly as a woman in a male-dominated industry. Since my first year in engineering, she is someone I have looked up to as a role model as I find her passion and skillset inspiring.โ
Katie MacLennan, a proud graduate with a Diploma in Engineering from StFX in 2022, hails from Bras dโOr. Sheโs now in her fourth year pursuing a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering at Dalhousie University. Drawn to engineering for its blend of science, innovation, problem-solving, and impactful work, Katie found her passion ignited at StFX. The inclusive environment and personalized guidance from professors there shaped her career path. With Co-Op experience in Power Generation, Technology, and Defense, Katie is set to make waves in her field.
๐ง ๐โ๏ธ๐ฅToday engineering students Joelle Thompson and James Hillaby volunteered along with Dr. MacDonald-MacAulay to present in the Antigonish BrainBee Reverse Science Fair and discuss how engineering can relate to the brain. We chose to discuss prosthetics. We placed second in the reverse science fair - amazing work Joelle and James!
What a fun day! Thank you so much for having us / Dr. Erin Mazerolle and Sherry Neville-MacLean!
Congratulations to the StFX Engineering Society, who recently won the first ever Atlantic Tournament hosted by the Atlantic Council of Engineering Students (ACES). StFX competed against all other Atlantic universities, including some schools that are 16 times its size.
The tournament was a social media-based competition with a series of fun but competitive tasks. โThe Engineering Society here at StFX continues to grow and flourish, and winning the Atlantic Tournament shows how dedicated the students in engineering here are and that we can accomplish big things even though we are such a small school compared to the others,โ says second year engineering student Selina Blois, who was able to attend the Engineering Leadership Summitโwhere the award was presentedโalong with fellow engineering and physics student Kevin Bronson.
โI felt very proud of everyone who participated. We are small, but we can do big things.โ

Congratulations to the St.FX Engineering Society of winning the first Atlantic Tournament hosted by the Atlantic Council of Engineering Students. This tournament involved a series of tasks that fostered respectful competition and showcased each universityโs spirit. The final competition involved creating a mannequin challenge video. I saw you all come together as a team through these competitions, representing the university so strongly.
Thank you for hosting this event and giving students the opportunity to take part in a fun competition at a distance.
I would also like to congratulate all participating universities on what was a great collegial competition. Thank you to Craig Seaboyer for joining us in the final competition, and to Dr. Gerry Marangoni for providing us with his guitar! Finally, thank you to all who voted for these wonderful students to help them succeed!

Want to help us update our webpage? Take a look at the second photo - we would love to see what you think representโs engineering or engineering at St.FX. We are looking to replace the current plane photo.
We welcome original, high quality photos (please no copyright issues/ concerns).
Please send potential photos to Brittany - [email protected] by Wednesday September 27th at 1pm.
The department faculty will then meet to consider which will replace the current photo.
Thank you!
What an afternoon! So lucky to have St.FXโs Laurie Reid come into the Thermo-Fluids I lab and provide a very informative OHS overview followed by excellent WHMIS training! These skills are so important and having Laurieโs expertise was wonderful.
Thank you so much to the fantastic Megan Turner ()for coming in to the first year engineering design and graphics course to provide a presentation on Service Learning.
Weโbe been so lucky to have the opportunity to work with the Service Learning team to provide unique opportunities for our students to be exposed to the engineering experience in their first year of study!
It was so great to meet everyone today at the Academic Day panel event! Thank you for your participation and wonderful questions.
Weโll see you Monday night at the Xaverian Welcome, please come say hi!

Meet engineering student Gabriel Cozzi! Gabriel was a summer research student holding an NSERC USRA and working with Dr. Brittany MacDonald-MacAulay. Gabrielโs work focused on the potential for tire-based berms to be utilized in Antigonish to address flood plain related concerns. More specifically Gabriel focused on identifying optimal filler combinations for this work and undertook a comprehensive literature review of flood mitigating measures. The project involved a number of scope changes over the summer but Gabriel persevered and worked diligently toward a scholarly contribution. It is the hope that this work can become a publication in the future.
Awesome work Gabriel!
Note: in these photos there were no materials of concern utilized requiring PPE.
Part 1/2 - On Tuesday, Katarin and Brittany spent the day in Sherbrooke having a blast making slime, doing yoga (learning about balance), conducting an egg drop, making dancing tissue paper figures, etc. Lots of creativity in this group! Thanks so much Saint Maryโs for having us!
