Great WE-CAN story on Indigenous entrepreneur and Kwe-Biz alumna, Lisa Isaac HR Professional Services! See below.

WE-CAN Client Profile: Lisa Isaac is the owner of Lisa Isaac HR Professional Services based in Sarnia, Ontario, and Moose Deer Point First Nation. She is also a past client of the WE-CAN Project’s Kwe-Biz Program for Indigenous Women Entrepreneurs.

Lisa launched her business in 2018, both through necessity and a desire to make an impact.

“As a single business professional who needed to bring in an income, the business plan happened quickly,” Lisa shares.

“In January 2018 I was at the Human Resources Professional Association (HRPA) annual conference listening to an inspiring, Indigenous speaker, Gene Jamieson, and one year later he and I were collaborating to facilitate a 3-day workshop. Sometime in between these milestones, I was networking with the Chamber of Commerce for the HRPA when the chamber referred my first client.”

Today, Lisa Isaac HR serves small and medium-sized businesses in Canada and the USA with a focus on a variety of industries including trades, technology, manufacturing, not-for-profits, Indigenous organizations and First Nation governments.

“We focus primarily on HR operations and daily HR tasks,” Lisa explains. “We also do complex employee relations (harassment, conflict, investigations, and health & safety) and help businesses through their entire HR life cycle (recruitment, onboarding, growth, and transitioning out of the organization).”

Lisa is particularly passionate about furthering the HR profession, working alongside Aboriginal Financial Officers Association (AFOA Canada) which designates individuals through the Certified Indigenous Human Resources Professionals (CIHRP), and as a Board of Director on the HRPA.

“The AFOA has been a driver of growth and development for the next generation of Indigenous HR professionals,” she notes.

When it comes to serving her clients, Lisa says she is most excited by “getting to see people learn new skills in order to grow and develop professionally. I am lucky enough to have seen this through business owners, leaders, and employees. My mission is to ‘work myself out of a job’ since I aim to help HR professionals reach a place where they are able to implement the necessary processes effectively by themselves.”

She also thrives in working with a dedicated team which support her in creating a greater impact through collaboration.

Of her experience with the Kwe-Biz Program for Women Entrepreneurs, Lisa says, “Shyra and Rye have brought me lots of amazing value regarding more effective operations, branding, being better integrated into the community, connecting me to Kerry, and even helping me expand my 8-person team.”

Great feature on Krista Armstrong, owner of Sweetgrass Therapy in Kingston! See below.

WE-CAN Client Profile: Krista Armstrong is the owner of Sweetgrass Therapy, a holistic counselling service based in Kingston. She is also a past participant of the Kwe-Biz Program for Indigenous Women Entrepreneurs.

When Krista launched her business in 2021, she deliberately started out small to allow her to transition from her full-time job to being her own boss.

“I started out virtually at first,” says Krista, who eventually struck out on her own in early 2023.

She decided to launch her business after several years of working in the same field as part of a group practice.

Although my previous experience was overall a really great learning opportunity, I felt that I was working to create someone else’s vision and live out their values rather than my own,” Krista shares. “Ultimately, I decided that the only way for me to practice in a way that felt 100 per cent authentic was for me to take the reins into my own hands.”

Today, Sweetgrass Therapy serves a wide variety of clients of all ages and from all walks of life. The majority of her clients are women -identifying, although she also serves men and non-binary folks.

Krista mainly treats anxiety, grief and self-esteem challenges which she says are unfortunately more common among women due to social pressures.

“I use a variety of evidence-based modalities in my work, along with lived experience and Indigenous knowledge that I’ve been fortunate to gain throughout my career,” says Krista whose core service is individual counselling and therapy.

“Seeing my clients grow and reach their goals is the most exciting factor for me,” she adds. “Being able to see people achieve things they initially didn’t think were possible and create new, healthier ways of being, both with themselves and in their relationships is so rewarding. I’m in a very privileged position and get a front row seat to watching people step into their full potential.

Beautiful story about Asha Frost. She is a best selling Indigenous author, speaker, and healer. Story shared below.

WE-CAN Client Profile: Asha Frost, Healing Rainbow Medicine Woman is an Indigenous healer, oracle deck creator and best-selling author of You Are the Medicine. She is from the Crane Clan (aji-jaak Dodem) and holds membership at Neyaashiinigmiig (Cape Croker) First Nation.

Asha is also a participant in the Kwe-Biz Program for Indigenous Women Entrepreneurs offered through the WE-CAN Project.

“My life work is to help people connect to the medicine that has always been within them,” says Asha, who launched her business in 2004. “I started a private practice as a homeopath holding a vision to help support people with their physical, mental, emotional and spiritual healing.”

Asha came to her business path through a Lupus diagnosis in her late teens, where “homeopathy helped me deeply,” she shares.

“This illness became my gateway to an incredible spiritual journey,” she recalls. “Due to colonization, marginalization and oppression, I had been disconnected from my routes. My journey has been about reconnecting to my rich heritage of being an Ojibway woman and all of the brilliant teaching sand medicines that surround me. Lupus opened me up to remembering who I truly am: Medicine Woman, Healer, Mentor and Soul Seer.”

Since starting out on her journey, Asha’s business has seen many changes, though her core purpose remains the same.

“I have since created an online platform as an Indigenous Healer, written a book and created an oracle deck,” she notes. “My work serves folks who wish to connect to Indigenous teachings in a respectful way and use them to connect to the earth and the spirit world.”

Asha also offers online mentorship programs for healers and visionaries, as well as public speaking services for events, opening and closing ceremonies, as well as workshops.

“I adore creating products infused with medicine that empowers, uplifts and inspires healing,” shares Asha. “It has been so exciting to see my words travel globally and to impact people on a greater scale. I also love public speaking and sharing my healing energy with humans in real life."

Of her experience in the Kwe-Biz Program, Asha adds, “I have loved working with Shyra. She is highly knowledgeable and supportive for my Indigenous voice and how to best amplify it in the world.”
