Catalytic converter thefts have been on the rise in recent years with incidents in the GTA targeting Japanese and Korean-made vehicles in particular.
So what is a catalytic converter and why are they so sought after?
As part of your vehicle's exhaust system the catalytic converter is a cylindrical unit located on the underside of your vehicle that filters toxic fumes created by the combustion of fuel in your vehicle's engine. It subsequently converts those fumes into the by-products of carbon dioxide and water, which then escape the exhaust system through the tailpipe.
As these devices contain the precious metals of Platinum, Palladium and Rhodium, catalytic converters are sought out by thieves for their easy access and high financial return. As the value of precious metals in the market has increased, so too have the incidences of catalytic converter thefts increased.
So what can be done about it?
Although there are currently no failsafe methods to preventing these types of thefts, there are crime prevention strategies that you can implement which will make you vehicle a less appealing target.
The best method for preventing these thefts is to park your vehicle inside your garage in order to prevent unwanted access to it. If garage parking is not an option, choose a parking spot that is well lit, and which ideally provides clear, unobstructed visibility between you and your vehicle. An area where CCTV surveillance cameras are present is also preferable, as it will allow for the capture of video evidence of any suspect that commits or attempts to commit a theft.
Increasing the sensitivity of your vehicle's security system; engraving your catalytic converter with your vehicle's VIN number; and installing an after-market anti-theft device are also options for deterring thieves.
Should you become a victim of this type of theft, you will notice a loud rumbling sound upon starting your vehicle. For your safety, do not continue to operate the vehicle; contact your local police service and report it to your vehicle's insurance company.
