What a way to make someone feel good.

Within my kit I take to my sessions, I have these paintings that when brushed with water the beautiful colours appear.

Activities don’t have to happen if the family asks me to go to the doctor with the client, like today.

My main focus is Recreation Therapy, but we can keep the meaningful activities for later if I can help out in some other way.

Today, after the appointment we went to Tim Hortons and did a word search and played ‘Name 5’.

I’m flexible, if there is anything specific you would like me to do with a client, I can do it!

I'm Julie, the face behind Joyful Moments.

Let me tell you why I started this business.

While working with seniors, those with Dementia, stoke, many other chronic illnesses AND their caregivers for 10+ years; I became aware that there isn't enough support for them.

I've met many stressed out, burnt out caregivers whose loved ones won't leave the house, are showing different behaviours, and ultimately are worried about changes they see in them.

I was determined to develop a solution to help those with health setbacks and their caregivers through Recreation Therapy.

I know that I can make a positive difference in people's lives. Bringing joy through meaningful activities and moments of respite for caregivers.

That is my 'why' to my new venture, Joyful Moments!

Captured just couple of the many joyful moments we had in my last visit.

During this session we laughed, talked about the past, went out of her retirement home to visit Tim Hortons for her favourite donut and coffee, and played her favourite game- Rummy-O while humming along with instrumental hymns playing in the background.

At Joyful Moments we use the 5 domains of life in our visits to increase independence, health, and quality of life. The domains we focus on are: cognitive, social, emotional, physical, and spiritual. Check out our website under the Service tab for more information and examples of what we can do during our visits.

She was so happy, and is looking forward to our next visit in a week.

5 Most Common Types of Dementia.

10/11/2022

People have asked me what the difference between Dementia and Alzheimers is.

Dementia is an umbrella term with many different types depending what areas of the brain are affected and how.

We hear of Alzheimers most often because it's by far the most popular type of Dementia.

We need to treat those living with Dementia with respect and dignity. Don't put these folks down in any way.

Neurotransmitters are working slower or depleted. Grey matter in the brain is increasing. Therefore Dementia can affect a persons personality, behaviour, emotions, and how to think rationally.

Swipe to see tips on what we should do and what we shouldn't do when communicating with those with Dementia.

You are considered caregiver if you support a family member, partner, or friend with their mental and/or physical heath.

Things you enjoy doing outside of work and chores are important!

Barriers in health doesn't mean you can't do the things you enjoy!

Here at Joyful Moments we pay close attention to the interests, needs, and abilities of the individual to make goals and plan activities. We are creative and passionate for making those we are working with happy, while providing respite for the caregiver.

Recreation and leisure activities are essential in our lives. The joy we get from them give us a better quality of life, and over all better mental and physical health.

Here are some things I (Julie) enjoy doing: baking and cooking, being in nature whether that be walking, on a bike, boat, or ATV, spiritual practices, gardening crafting.

What is something you enjoy doing?
