Today is the International Day of Listening!

Have you ever heard the saying that there is a reason we have two ears and one mouth? The exact saying came from a Greek philosopher named Epictetus. It goes, “We have two ears and one mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we speak.” For some reason, though, this doesn’t seem to hold true. Most people have a natural desire to talk. But when we’re talking, we’re not listening.

Asahi Kasei and Nara Medical University Confirm 226 nm UVC LED Efficacy Against SARS-CoV-2 and Verify Reduced Effect on Animal Skin Cells 13/09/2021

Very interesting and timely study. According to the press release "Asahi Kasei announces the results of joint research with Nara Medical University regarding the efficacy of 226 nm ultraviolet-C (UVC) LEDs in the inactivation of the coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) that causes COVID-19, and its effects on animal skin cells. This is the first study in the world conducted with LEDs of this wavelength, and the results confirm that the 226 nm UVC LEDs are able to quickly inactivate SARS-CoV-2 while having significantly less effect on animal skin cells than 270 nm UVC LEDs."

Smart ceiling fan incorporates UV-C radiating LED module 12/09/2021

Germicidal ceiling fans incorporating UVC LEDs are a new product category that has emerged as a result of the Covid crisis. Was intrigued to see another solution below making some germicidal claims. According to the article "An independent CAP (College of American Pathologists) and CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments) accredited lab, Innovative Bioanalysis, has tested the efficacy of the ULTRA, which uses patent-pending technology that incorporates UV-C technology to reduce airborne pathogens in a space. The lab tests showed a 99.99% reduction of collectable active pathogens in the air, and that the active SARS-CoV-2 virus was not detectable in the breathable air after just 30 minutes of operation of the ULTRA in the room.*" For those that are interested, a copy of the validation report for the system can be downloaded from the company website. Link in article.

Disinfection of SARS-CoV-2 using UVC reveals wavelength sensitivity contributes towards rapid virucidal activity 10/09/2021

Some additional research examining the efficacy of different UV wavelengths to inactivate SARS-CoV-2. According to the preprint article "This study aimed to determine the inactivation profile of SARS-CoV-2 using UVC irradiation with different wavelengths, in addition to validating surrogate models for SARS-CoV-2. Specifically, the study determined dosage, inactivation levels, and wavelength sensitivity of SARS-CoV-2....These results determine that 259 and 268 nm are the most efficient wavelengths compared to longer UVC wavelengths, allowing the calculation of disinfection systems efficacy, and providing a benchmark for surrogates."

Disinfection of SARS-CoV-2 using UVC reveals wavelength sensitivity contributes towards rapid virucidal activity SARS-CoV-2 is a pathogen that can be disinfected using UVC. For effective inactivation strategies, design and implementation of UVC disinfection, knowledge of wavelength sensitivity, and disinfection rate of the relevant pathogen are required. This study aimed to determine the inactivation profile o...

Today's post relates to water disinfection in airplanes. International Water-Guard Industries Inc. is the world’s leading provider of flight-certified potable water treatment units for airplanes. According to the article below " The UVL1 carries out the vital task of ensuring that the aircraft water is free of harmful pathogens such as the bacteria and viruses that cause a range of illnesses (including dysentery, e-coli, rotavirus and legionella). These pathogens can also cause airlines to fail coliform sampling testing and the associated cost and inconvenience that brings...UVL1 will be flying and certified in Q3 2021."

Seoul Viosys’ Violeds Technology Proves 99% Disinfection of COVID-19 Delta Variant in a Second to Support Airborne Viruses Prevention 06/09/2021

Some additional COVID inactivation results utilizing UV disinfection. For this research, the work was done on a Delta variant (SARS-CoV-2:B.1.617.2). Work was sponsored by Seoulviosys, a leading UVC-LED supplier. According to the release, the virus was "disinfected (inactivated) by 99.3% in one second according to a surface disinfection experiment using Violeds technology conducted by the Korea University research team in July 2021. In the air disinfection experiment using Violeds technology conducted in Seoul Viosys’ laboratory (60㎥), the virus was reduced by 90% in 10 minutes."

Ashok Gadgil & team - UV water disinfection device (ceremony) 05/09/2021

Great video recently uploaded by The European Patent Office. I have been following Dr Ashok Gadgil since my early days working in this business. He and his colleagues developed a very simple UV disinfection system (UV Waterworks) for water that has left a tremendous impact. I really like his quote in the video "Any idiot can make something complicated. It is very difficult to make something simple"

UV-C uptake in commercial spaces remains sporadic despite pandemic (MAGAZINE) 04/09/2021

LEDs Magazine continues to impress me with their timely articles and great content related to UV disinfection issues. The latest issue is out and they have not disappointed. Great article below examining the uptake of UV disinfection in commercial spaces. According to the article "Commercial building owners and facilities managers covering offices to restaurants to institutions have been slow to move toward large-scale UV-C installations...What seems to be happening, however, is that the UV-C uptake will mostly be limited to applications where there is a return on investment (ROI) that isn’t tied to warding off the next pandemic." There is a good review of some of these specific applications.

UV-C uptake in commercial spaces remains sporadic despite pandemic (MAGAZINE) Companies that rushed UV-C disinfection products to market based on legacy lamp and LED sources are still finding building owners and managers that want to test the germicidal technology in a limited fashion, reports MAURY WRIGHT.
