Sara and Katie from DFO's Prince Rupert branch were checking the newly installed Dungeness crab larval light trap last week. Their trap is the most northern trap to be included in a network of Dungeness crab light traps that span the US and Canadian West Coast (a project started by the Pacific Northwest Crab Research group).

This network of traps hopes to shed some light on larval crab origins and movement and may be able to be used to help predict future abundance. 🦀

Area B crab harvesters are down at the Port Edward and Prince Rupert docks, preparing for their April 1st season opener.

Crab management areas A, E, G and H are also currently open for commercial crab harvest.

👉 Check out the map at the end of the photos if you'd like to learn if the commercial crab fishery is open close to you.

Wishing all Area B harvesters a great 2023 season!

👉 Did you know that it takes about four years for a male crab to reach the legal size for harvesting?

All Dungeness crab must measure 165mm "notch to notch" to be of legal size. This allows every male crab to have at least one to two years of sexual maturity before being harvested.

All females and undersized crab are returned to the water to help continue to grow the population. 🦀

Check out this easy Dungeness crab sauce recipe from Chef Rob Clark 🍴🦀

🦀Holy crab! Chef Rob Clark's tasty BC Dungeness Crab sauce recipe might just be our new favourite seafood topper and pasta sauce! Try it for yourself with this easy-to-follow recipe that requires only 1 – 2 ingredients:

Ingredients:

🦀 Whole BC Dungeness Crab that has been boiled for 10 – 12 minutes (depending on size), then cooled slightly and cleaned immediately.

🧈 [Optional]: Whole Unsalted Butter (or 35% cream, if preferred)

Method:

1️⃣Reserve the crab butter (the yellow solidified product found in the head of the crab shell) after it has been cooked. Place in a sauce pot.
2️⃣Reserve all the other liquid that comes out of the crab when you are cleaning it, adding it to the same pot as the crab butter.
3️⃣Bring this mixture to a boil and cook until it has been reduced by about half and looks like it is splitting (it is splitting!)
4️⃣Place this in a blender and purée until it is emulsified and smooth
5️⃣Strain through a fine mesh strainer and it is ready to use
6️⃣Add to pasta, soups, or cream sauces for seafood.

⭐ Chef's Note: you can also add 35% cream, or whole unsalted butter, to lessen the intensity of the sauce; Chef likes to whisk in some fresh, unsalted butter. Buy BC

Have you ever seen a white Dungeness crab?

This 2+ pounder was caught this fall in the Hecate Strait by the crew of the F/V Nanruss. The white coloration happens from a condition called leucism (partial pigment loss), and the odds of it happening to a Dungeness are one in six million!

This isn't the first time that a white crab has been caught in BC. In 2021 Robbie Heggelund and his crew were fishing in Sooke and caught the same white Dungeness five times (photo 2) before they donated him to Sidney’s Shaw Centre for the Salish Sea. The center named him Walter White.

Check out the article link in our bio to learn more about Walter.

In many fisheries all over Canada (and the world), the skills and knowledge needed to harvest our delicious wild seafood are passed down through generations of families working together on the water. Families like the Heggelunds who have fished for three generations, and now four, with the youngest ones learning the ropes!

Robbie Heggelund and his family harvest Dungeness crab onboard the F/V Spodin out of Sooke, BC. They also harvest Halibut, Rockfish, Sablefish, Salmon and Tuna!

Happy Family Day from our families to yours!

We were grateful to meet with NDP party leader Jagmeet Singh and North Coast MP Taylor Bachrach today while they were in Prince Rupert. They were able to escape the rain and stay dry aboard the F/V Fat Fish. Thanks to Telell and Colton Waldhaus for having them on board.

Another big thanks to Joy Thorkelson from the UFAWU for helping to organize the meeting and Duncan Cameron from the BC Crab Fisherman's Association for sharing his knowledge about BC's crab fishery.

We always appreciate the time spent by our elected representatives to learn about the importance of fisheries to our coastal communities!
