There’s still a bit of snow in the background, but the weather is beautiful and we are very happy to be working outside again!

Beck 💫

02/10/2022

This is one of my favourite pictures of Beck, our 6 yr OTTB event prospect.

Beck retired from the track last winter. He is a forward thinking horse who always gives 110%. We feed Brooks Performance KER & KPP products, and his diet is supplemented with Canpressco camelina oil for extra calories and natural Vitamin E.

We talk a lot about management for our senior horses, the things we do to keep them healthy and happy as they age.

The truth is that we manage our young horses and seniors the same way — plenty of hay, customized feed programs, and quality supplements to meet their needs.

Very excited to see Simon’s pictures from Lane’s End ‘Ride for a Cure’ on August 8.

Many thanks to Susan Laverty and Dave Fletcher for hosting this amazing event. Your contributions to both the Ontario Eventing community and cancer research are inspiring.

Thank you Christina Handley Photography and Rebecca Gullett for donating your time and talent to this great cause. It is appreciated!

Simon finished 3rd in a competitive Open Pre-Training division. He’s been very consistent this season, also finishing 4th at Will O’Wind and Bronte Creek.

"Adding Canpressco to our program we have seen an improvement in our horse's skin and hair coats, gut health, exercise tolerance as well as exercise recovery. We prefer to feed a higher fat, low glycemic diet to our horses. Canpressco has provided the Vitamin E, Omega 3 and fats supplementation in an easy palatable product." - Andrew Rafail

There are two predominant concerns that our riders have expressed after being separated from their horses for the past two months:

The first, if the riders have lost their riding fitness, will that have a negative impact on their horses physically?

The second is a question that comes up often after any extended period of relative equine inactivity - be it COVID-19 barn closures or stall rest - if the horse isn’t fit, how do they build fitness while avoiding injury, and if the horse seems stiff, what does that mean and what should they do about it?

I’ve mentioned before that we are very fortunate to have access to Tracy Thompson of Activate Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation on a weekly basis. She has worked on my horses, my riders, and is a valued client and friend.

She put together three videos back in April discussing what equine physiotherapy is and what it can do for our horses. Honestly, I can’t imagine a better time to share them.

The 3rd video (click play on the link below), shares details of what Tracy is able to offer as a physiotherapist, some of her techniques, and a brief description of her equipment: therapeutic ultrasound, laser, muscle stimulator, and kinesiotape.

In the 1st video, she shares information about her training and practice of both human and equine physiotherapy in the UK, Europe, and North America: https://www.facebook.com/225250441569390/videos/531559380885536/

The 2nd video shares an account of a case that had a strong impact on her: https://www.facebook.com/225250441569390/videos/227480751808442/

Equine physiotherapy has been a valuable asset to our training program, and we are very lucky to have a practitioner of this quality in Canada.
