New Graphic Score, with open instrumentation! ✅
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
The piece is called “A Question of Composition” and is my first ever graphic score! 🖼 It came out of a collaboration between
UBC Composition students, UBC’s Contemporary Players Ensemble, and the Belkin Art Gallery! 🎨

My score is a response to Josèfa Ntjam’s ( ) amazing artwork “Luciferin Drop”, and will be realized by fellow music students 🎶 in the Contemporary Players ensemble in a concert at UBC’s Belkin Art Gallery! The concert will be at Noon on Friday October 29th . See you in two weeks! 🗓

I’ll be sharing more about the piece as we get closer to the concert!🎵

Thank you so much and Contemporary Players for organizing this opportunity! Designing the score was super fun 😁, and I can’t wait to see what the ensemble comes up with!

On vacation, did some star gazing last night, got inspired, wrote poetry. Simple. ✨⭐️🌟💫

Being surrounded by the night and trees with no polluting city light reminded me of how much of a vibe quiet summer nights are. Not too mention the night sky with its glorious jewels…🌌

10/10 would recommend any 10hr nighttime ambience ASMR (Isochronic convergence tones, 433 Hz) videos

It’s an arduous process, and I’ve been putting it off a bit, but I am halfway done creating my official website! 🎉🎉🎉

Besides doing some minor touch ups, (and having less stock photos 😅) all I need to finish is the homepage, and then add links so people can watch/listen to my music, or buy the sheet music!

I’ll be posting the link on my profile as soon as I’m done, so keep your eyes peeled 👀

Happy Saturday! 😊

Finally, I have arrived to the point I've been waiting for this entire school year 🎼...
Since starting second year, and even since getting into UBC's music school, I was beyond looking forward to taking MUSC 310, the class where you learn how to write music for an orchestra!
Until recently, everything we've been learning is buildup: learning how to write for smaller groups of instruments, what works best on which instrument etc. But now for the past week I've been working on this assignment where I take a piano piece and arrange for a small orchestra! I put in a lot of work, and I'm quite happy with the result. This assignment was both challenging and highly rewarding..

Enjoy my finished orchestration of Edvard Grieg's piano piece "Spring Dance" for chamber orchestra!

Soon may come the glorious sun and flowers of Spring!

Musings of a COVID-detester, sometimes paraphrasing Shakespeare~~
————————————————————
In what was to be the magnificent month of March, followed by glorious summer sun, wrought onto this mortal plane instead was a deathly winter of discontent.

Who knew an organism of microscopic proportions could fell the comparatively macroscopic? But beyond this, who knew it could transcend the physical and murder the abstract and immaterial?

Robbed were all, robbed of life, family, friends, community, live music and creativity.

In this winter of discontent, I plunged deep into this dark abyss of death and despair, and while I body remained, my muse lay with wings clipped, and death caressing it, robbed of fellow muses to edify, wonders to gaze, and sounds to hear in the flesh.

Movement I, “Death” was felt, reality gutted to emptiness and simplicity.

Yet, seasons change and winters melt. From the opposing crest of the valley of shadow of death, lay approaching light. This light was not a wash, or tide, but a needle, a precise shot, dispensed from a needle. Contained in the light was hope, a primal force of the sentient. Directly at my soul the shot pierced. I, for too long sunken low in the valley of the shadow of death material and immaterial, felt utterly changed by this shot of hopeful light.

With this shot came Movement II, “Transfiguration”. The hope first a simple bud, then swelling and bursting into bloom. Growing from the rose of hope came the thorns of confidence, which I have in past been afraid to let pierce. And with the rose of hope, was the valley of the shadow of death smoothed in my vision. It was not made plain and level, but lessened. I felt no longer so deep in its now small abyss. I could now see it’s crest, to which I could now walk. From the distance, being closer than ever but still far, I could see and hear that which I value most, a bustling scene of musicians, playing music of all times and places...

I have been LESS busy with school! But still busy...
Yet, I somehow found five hours in one day to start and finish more of my unique homework 📚

Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas forthcoming!

I have been so busy with school! 😫I have not posted at all besides random piano improv 🎹. I haven’t even promoted my album that came out at the beginning of this month 😂. Oh well, stuff happens. Now I have a bit more free time, so I’d thought I share some more of my unique homework 📚! This time, I’ve arranged the 3rd movement of Beethoven’s iconic Piano Sonata No.1 in F minor for Wind Octet! (2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets and 2 bassoons) Enjoy, and Happy 250 years Beethoven 👑!

Like everyone, I've been busy doing uni homework. However, as a music student, my homework can look a little different (some would say unconventional hehehe). This year, one of my favorite courses is Instrumentation, the process of choosing instruments for a piece of music, and writing for those instruments in a way that makes sense. For course assignments so far, we have been arranging piano music for string instruments (violin, viola, cello, bass), and in the latest of these assignments, I was given a slice of Johannes Brahms 'Romance, Op.118, No.5' to arrange. What you're seeing is likely the finished product of multiple hours filled of obsessive listening, thinking, and editing (but also creativity hopefully). I am very pleased with the result, and loved doing this assignment! Enjoy this luscious richness of a string orchestra!

A few nights ago I was again thinking about that amazing metaphor for the truth being a sword. Words turning in my head, trying to keep it consistent and reflect what I believe. After 2 hours of writing and editing, I’ve competed the next part of the metaphor. I’m still amazed and grateful for how well-received it was last time! I appreciated every single like people gave it! Seeing many people enjoyed it last time , I’ve decided to share it this next addition to it. Enjoy, and please tell em what you think!

Photos from Leif Jack Composer's post 31/08/2020

I was having a wonderful conversation earlier today with a dear friend and they used this superb metaphor. The metaphor touched me, and felt right. But it felt, incomplete. So I expanded upon it, the words gushing from my mind, expanding on every facet and aspect of the this simple, declarative, yet powerful metaphor. I was amazed by my own competence at expanding the metaphor, every word felt true and right, to the best of my ability, a sincere expression of my deepest beliefs. I have pride for what I have written. However, my feelings towards the original metaphor, and the creative result from it, are best described in the words of Frank Herbert, the author of the “Dune” saga: Kull wahad! (I am profoundly stirred!) I was unable to fit everything I wrote into 10 photos, so here is the very last part of my expansion: But with time, people have encountered the sword, studied it, and become acquainted with its previous bearers, capable of distinguishing between a terrible sword and a great one, between a terrible bearer and a great one..........

Today, I was cleaning a ludicrously messy desk in my basement to prepare for the coming school year. As I was clearing it out, I find a CD. The CD had my name on it, with the title “Liberty of Animaltopia”. Then the memories came back to me 🤣. When I was 10, I made this video with two friends and the help of my older sister. Miraculously, even after 9-10 years and some scratches, the CD worked perfectly fine!!! Enjoy!

Understandably 10 year old me didn’t exactly have the most coherent story in mind, but here’s the gist: an evil minion tries to blow up the landing pod of Master Chief from the Halo Series. Luckily for Master Chief, a 🦇 who is a master of martial arts, and has long purple beard (not a tongue 🤣) stops the minion’s plan. Master chief and the bat later join with another master of martial arts, a Wolf, and then defeat the Dark Lord or something in an epic fight in the volcano. They heros later party with ducks.
