Creating an outline

Good morning! We hope you are having a great week.

Wednesdays are for tips! Today we have a tip to help you to write an outline for an assignment. Why is it beneficial to write an outline for your assignment? An outline helps you to organize and narrow down your ideas. It is a map of your assignment. And how do you create a good outline for an assignment? That is a good question, isn’t it? Here you can find some guidelines:

Decide on your topic based on the assignment description.

Have a thesis statement to guide the process of writing your assignment.

Create a list of main ideas that will guide your writing.

Support your ideas with valuable sources.

Summarize these ideas in a simple way and organize them in bullet points.

Review and revise your outline.

Have your outline ready so you do not get lost in your writing!

Words of the day:
Do you remember your high school days when sometimes you had to cram and burn the midnight oil on exam nights?
(To crams means to prepare yourself for an examination by learning a lot of information quickly
and
to burn midnight oil means study until late at night)
Do you still sometimes have to study till the wee hours of the morning?
Can you guess what till wee hours mean?

📣 EAP Tip of the Day: Proofreading strategies

Good morning! We hope you are having a fantastic week.

Wednesdays are for tips! Today we have some strategies to help you proofread your assignments.

Proofreading your assignment is an important process to make sure you submit the best version of your work. Here you can find some strategies for efficient proofreading:

1. Take a break from writing. Put your work aside for some time before you start proofreading your paper.
2. Read from a hard copy when possible.
3. Read your paper aloud.
4. Use a page or ruler to read one line at a time.
5. Pay special attention to what you know are your most common mistakes.
6. Read your paper several times. Look each time for a specific issue: spelling, sentence structure, word choice, punctuation, etc.
7. Proofreading expert tip: Create your own proofreading checklist!

Proofread before your submission, so you do not regret your decisions! 🧐

📣 EAP Tip of the Day: How to write a thesis statement for an argumentative paper

Good morning! We hope you are having a wonderful week.

Wednesdays are for tips! Today we have some tips to help you write a thesis statement for an argumentative paper.

What is a thesis statement? A thesis statement is a sentence that summarizes the main arguments for your essay. Here you can find some guidelines to write a strong thesis statement:

1. It needs to state the topic of your essay.
2. It needs to be specific and state your main argument for your essay.
3. It should provide two to four reasons to support your main argument.
4. It can include an opposing viewpoint to your main argument.
5. It is placed near or at the end of the introductory paragraph of your essay.

Here is an example following these guidelines:

Although allowing children a substantial amount of screen time has been criticized in the past, there are several benefits to allowing children to use technology such as to develop digital literacy, learner autonomy, and communication skills.

Follow these guidelines for your thesis so that your argument does not fall to pieces! 😅

📣 EAP Tip of the Day: Creating a reverse outline

Good morning! We hope you are having a great week.

Wednesdays are for tips! Since last week we talked about creating an outline, today we have some tips about reverse outlining.

What is a reverse outline? When we have already written a draft for our assignment, it is a good idea to create an outline from that draft to assess if what we have written so far accomplishes the assignment’s requirements. A reverse outline will help us, for instance, to find gaps in our writing, identify repetitive information, and reflect on if our ideas are cohesive enough.

Here you can find some guidelines on creating a reverse outline:

1. Read each paragraph in your draft.
2. Take notes of the main ideas from each paragraph.
3. Are these ideas the reflection of what you planned in your initial outline? Are these ideas well developed and the main points properly summarized?
4. Make the necessary changes to your draft according to the answers from the questions above.

Take a moment and stop typing to continue writing! 🛑 💡🖊
