Why do we urban farm Organic Popcorn Shoots? For their obvious presentation of bright colour, sweet peaches and cream taste, and nutritional value benefits. You can use these beauties in cocktails, desserts, and so much more. Popcorn shoots are a source of vitamin A to maintain healthy organ functioning, vitamin E to protect the body against free radical damage, B vitamins to promote overall well-being, and vitamin C to strengthen the immune system while reducing inflammation. Popcorn shoots are crunchy, succulent, and tender. The shoots have a distinctly sweet flavor that lingers on the palate combined with a mild corn taste and a tart, grassy undertone. Popcorn shoots, botanically classified as Zea mays, are tiny, edible greens belonging to the Poaceae family. The distinct shoots are favored for their very sweet flavor and are utilized by chefs as a surprising garnish to add color, taste, and texture to culinary dishes, elevating the dining experience. The tender shoots cannot withstand high heat and should be added at the end of the cooking process to prevent the leaves from wilting. The shoots also have a neutral taste, allowing them to be incorporated into sweet or savory preparations. Popcorn shoots can be tossed into salads, layered into burgers and sandwiches, or placed on caprese as a colorful appetizer. The shoots can also be garnished over roasted meats and seafood, scrambled with eggs, or used as a taco or burrito ingredient. Try adding Popcorn shoots to corn chowders, risottos, or sauteed veggies. The crispy shoots can also be blended into sauces such as pesto or fermented into a corn-mash liquor. Popcorn shoots pair well with jicama, cherry tomatoes, avocado, dill, mushrooms, potatoes, meats such as beef, poultry, and pork, and seafood including fish, shrimp, and crab. Whole, unwashed Popcorn shoots will keep up to ten days when covered to prevent light from penetrating the sealed container and stored in the refrigerator. How to Extract Oil from Plants (Plus the Numerous Benefits and Uses) Extracted oils from plants, fruits, and herbs are growing in popularity. They are used for a number of things, from aromatherapy to medicinal applications to their use in cooking as well as in cosmetics and perfumes. Plant oil extractions may seem complicated to pursue at home, but it is much easier than you may think. We are currently putting together classes just how to do that! There are many different ways to extract the oil from plants and the process has to match up to the different types of plants and flowers being used. Each method offers you the best way to achieve the essence of the plant so you are left with the most potent form of the plant. What Exactly Are Extracted Oils? You may have heard of extractions from plants called essential oils. These liquids have been referred to in several ways but what it boils down to is they are the strongest version of a plant in a liquid form. It is suggested that essential oils be diluted with water before they reach their application level. It may sound as though these oils that are derived from plants are light and natural, but they are actually exactly the opposite. Each extraction is bringing you a concentrated version of the actual plant. When used in cooking, for example, essential oils have been proven to be 75 times stronger than herbs that have been dried. Some extractions are used for their scents and others are used for their flavoring abilities. Most extractions have to be combined with what is called a carrier oil (and others must be diluted before using. A carrier oil is a neutral oil that becomes the base of the extracted oil. Some carrier oils include sunflower, grapeseed, olive, almond, avocado, and jojoba There are different levels of dilution using carrier oils that range from one percent up to five percent. A one percent dilution would be six drops of extracted oil mixed with an ounce of the carrier oil. One of the most common uses for extracted oils is for aromatherapy. It can also be used to treat many health-related conditions.

Frizzy Viola tricolor var. hortensis. The prettiest so far in my collection. wide pansy faces, fancy frilled petals, and dazzling colours bring a really special look. Triple frilly bloom with an individual accent. This one speckled purple. Purple and yellow inside. Violas are a source of vitamins A and C, nutrients with antioxidant-like properties to strengthen the immune system, boost collagen production within the skin, and defend the cells against damage inflicted by external environmental aggressors. Did you think that these beautiful flowers were just a pretty face, once faded into the trash? I hope not ;/ as these wonderful botanicals are medicinal. Viola odorata as medicinal plant is used as poultice for treatment of headache, cough, colds, bronchitis, and fever in different Traditional medicines. Pansies were actually derived from violas, so technically speaking all pansies are violas but not all violas are pansies. While the blooms of violas are smaller than those of pansies, violas do have more blooms per plant, meaning they create a thicker layer of coverage. You can tell the difference between pansies and violas by looking at the number of petals. If the bloom has four petals pointing upward, and one petal pointing downward, it is a pansy. If the flower has two petals pointing upward and three pointing downward, it is a viola. Order yours today.

The cornflower, also known as the Bachelor’s Button, is an herb native to Europe. It once grew as a w**d in cornfields and derived its name from this habit. Now, it is grown as an ornamental flower in gardens and is a popular choice for floral arrangements. It is also a delicious addition to many recipes. History of the Cornflower
The plant is named after the mythological Greek centaur, Chiron, who shared his knowledge of herbs with humans. It has been said that cornflowers were used to heal a wound to Achilles caused by a poisoned arrow. n ancient Egypt, reproductions depicted cornflowers dating back to the Stone and Bronze Age. The archaeologist, Howard Carter, found wreaths and garland made of cornflowers in the tomb of King Tutankh-Amun. The art of the Middle Ages displays many paintings and decorative uses of cornflowers Through a series of events, the cornflower is also the National flower of Germany. In 1871, the year of Germany’s unification, Wilhelm, son of Queen Louise, honored his mother when he made the cornflower the symbol of unity. The cornflower is an edible flower with a spicy, clove-like flavor. It can be used as a decorative touch on cakes, in elaborate drinks, infused in alcohol (such as vodka), and as an extra color in salads. Cornflowers are full of extra nutrients such as folate, vitamin C, biotin, calcium, and flavones. The cornflower can also be used as a tea. The properties in the tea have been used for reducing fevers, constipation, water retention, and chest congestion. Growing medicinal flowers is a passion of mine. More varieties are growing to be added to our list. You knew that, of course I would be :) Let’s have tea, anyone?
