Do you ever notice a "snapping" feeling or a "thud" when you flex, extend or internally rotate your hip?

This can happen to one or both hips and is typically called "Snapping hip syndrome" (Coxa sultans or "Dancers Hip".)

If you dance 💃... or are an avid runner🏃‍♀️ weight lifter🏋️‍♀️ or soccer player ⚽️ - you may have or are currently experiencing this phenomenon.

This condition affects women>men and the sensation you're feeling could be an external source or internal source of your coxal joint (Hip joint).

❗️Internal (most common cause): Is the iliopsoas muscle tendon snapping over the anterior aspect of the femoral head of the greater trochanter or your hip.

❗️External (most common cause): Would be the iliotibial band falling over the greater trochanter of the hip while in the affected ranges.

✔️Please consult with your Doctor whether there are any underlying pathologies/injuries that could be affecting this condition or if you are in pain when the snapping occurs.

✔️If this is a "party trick" feeling when you workout and no pain is involved. You can consider stretching your Iliotibial band and strengthening your Gluteus Medius muscle.

Check with your physical therapist or Doctor to see what is the recommended therapeutic exercise for your experience and if massage is appropriate for you!

What is deep tissue massage...?

❌ It is not a sports massage, which could be considered as: Specific areas targeted for quick release with or without a dynamic approach.

❌And it is not General Swedish Massage, which could be considered as: A combination of kneading/petrissage, stripping/effleurage techniques.

☑️Deep tissue is a combination of firm pressure and slow strokes. ☑️

This massage approach allows therapists to access the deeper layers of fascia aiming to release muscle tension. As it is a slower technique, it would be best to book for more time with the therapist if more areas are needing attention.

Okay, okay, okay..
These RUBs ThouGH 👀

I purchased this lovely duo at the 🐝The Beehive Calgary 🌼. It brings me absolute joy to use them within my massage practice. Not only do my clients feel a decrease in their muscle pain, I can truly feel the effect of the product working. I have also had the pleasure of testing the Magnesium Muscle Relax Rub out on this unpleasant right piriformis cramp and I noticed within 10 minutes the dull ache diminished. I was able to sleep in peace!

If you haven't heard of this organic local honey shop, it is the cute little yellow building in Kensington 🏡!

Poor Posture?
The most common concern of clients I have seen..

So lets break down what could be considered "poor posture".
___Forward head posture (FHP):
Jutting chin, shortened posterior neck/ weak neck flexors or failure of the head to fall in-line of the vertical axis of the body.
___Forward shoulder posture (FSP):
Rounded or protracted shoulders or acromion angle falling anterior to the mastoid process (plumbline).
___Increased thoracic kyphosis
Rounded back or increase in the thoracic convexity due to imbalance of line of gravity.

* Can you have one, the other or all of them? *
An individual could have one and/or the other, or all of them. No one knows for certain what one condition could lead to the next. Or how only one condition can take place instead of the other.

FHP and FSP have been linked to these traits:
- Carrying backpacks 🎒
- Bad habits 😈
- Open mouth breathing 🥲
- Increased studying hours/computer time💻
- Phone usage/ texting📞
- Overhead activities (FSP)

What are the outcomes of having a FHP and FSP!?!?
💥Headaches! mostly from trigger points/knots in suboccipitals (little muscles under the posterior base of the skull).
💥Traveling pain from neck, face and shoulders
💥 Decreased range of motion of the shoulder
💥 Decreased strength of shoulder
💥Nerve pain into arm from strain of the brachial plexus due to anteriorly rolled shoulders (median nerve more commonly affected).

What to do?!
👍Strengthening exercises that target the areas that are considered weak!
FHP: Neck flexors
FSP: Low traps, serratus anterior
👍Stretching exercises that target the areas that are considered tight!
FHP: Upper traps, Levator scapulae
FSP: Pectoralis minor/ major

Check in with your Doctor to see what therapy is best for you. If you are looking for a massage therapist to guide you through your wellness journey - please find the "book now" button on the My Mayfair Mobile Massage page!

Plantar fasciitis💥

Is considered one of the most common causes of heel pain🦶. It can affect any individual - young or old - active or non-active 🥲.

What is your foot type? Do you have any structural phenomenon's with your feet? 🖖
- Pes cavus: Is an increased arch of your foot
- Pes planus: Is a decreased arch of the foot (Flat feet)
- Structural imbalances of the legs: One leg longer than the other

^ Any of these structural indifferences may be the cause of your plantar fasciitis. ^

Or perhaps you are on your feet all day long in those cute stilettos 👠 or enjoy running!🏃‍♀️ IF running is your thing - Check the quality of your shoes! Old and worn out arches creates a terrible impact on the concrete with each stride. 🦵

So! What does that pain at the bottom of the foot feel like? ☠️
💥Dull/aching
💥Throbbing
💥Considered most painful with first morning step, gets better with activity and worse with prolonged activity.

Fun Fact: Heel spurs may occur from plantar fasciitis - its when the lining of the bone (periosteum) peels when the tight fascia pulls from its attachment. This creates a small spike.. and actually feels like your stepping on one🥲😖

What to do?! Ughh
Well! There are many types of therapies you can try... Some include:
- Orthotics/splints/cups
- Anti -inflammatories
- Physical therapy/manual/massage therapy
- Stretching!

☑️The most considerable form of treatment is to stretch the gastrocnemius muscle 🦵. ☑️Some may find improvement with their plantar fasciitis by using a golf ball or a small wooden dowl to roll those feet out!

Before considering any therapy or medication consult your Doctor to see what's right for your needs!

Greater trochanteric pain
(or, Gluteus Medius strain)

Any one here have a limp when they walk🚶‍♀? Do you have a potential butt flick/hip wiggle with each step💃? Pain at the top lateral side of your hip😣?

Your glute med is trying to tell you something... Don't worry! If we were all symmetrical we wouldn't need therapists.... 👀

Affecting women>men - ⚡️ pain at the top lateral hip can refer down your lateral thigh and into the lateral side of your knee⚡️Pain may feel "dull/achy" - weakness can be presented w/ a resisted action of abduction and internal rotation of the hip.

How did this happen?! Well, according to Dr. Stephen Duncan a hip and knee specialist from Kentucky:
- Potential trauma to the area from long distance running and high impact sports
or "sudden bursts of activity and poor flexibility"
- Over use or degenerative changes

Most commonly felt with:
🚫 Walking, stairs, running or sitting and standing for too long or lying on the problem hip 🚫

Does this sound like you?
No need to fear! Contact your Doctor to see if Massage is an appropriate therapy for you. If you are looking for a Massage Therapist, you can find the book now button on the My Mayfair Mobile Massage page.

TMJD (Temporalmandibular joint dysfunction/disorder)

This condition involves the articular disc of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). When one opens their mouth the disc falls over the condyle of the mandible, when one closes there mouth the disc may get stuck - causing a locking of the mouth or a clicking sensation as it hops right back over the condyle upon closing. Or there could be a disruption in the discs path from injury, pathology or condition.

This condition can be rather frustrating as symptoms may include:
❌Pain/tenderness in jaw
❌Aching pain around ear
❌ Jaw clicks
❌Difficulty chewing

Causes of TMJD could be a one or a combination of things that may include:
- Traumatic injury (whiplash, blow to face etc)
- Stress/ Anxiety (for those who clench or grind your teeth)
- Arthritis
- Or even genetics

It is said that TMJD is only temporary and may be alleviated with:
☑️Physical Therapy
☑️Counselling
☑️Meditation/ stress reduction exercises
☑️Medications like anti-inflammatories or anti-depressants (consult your Doctor for a suitable prescription based around your needs.)

Todays condition was inspired from my current experiences with TMJD 🥲

Consult your Doctor and/or Dentist if massage is right for you and your TMJD.
If you are looking for a Massage Therapist with experience/specialization in TMJD, It'd be my pleasure to refer you!

Thank you TMJ disorders: Mayo Clinic - for information for this post

Oh shin splints, shin splints🤦‍♀️

Raise your foot if you've been through this..

Increased repetitive stress on the shin from activity causes a pull on the "skin of the bone" or your periosteum of the tibia. We've all been kicked there at least once to know where the shin is 🥲

Dominant muscles that are "overdoing it" are typically:
- Tibialis anterior (closest muscle to your shin on the lateral side of your low leg)
- Soleus and Gastrocnemius (calf)

Activities like:
🏃‍♀️ running, 🏀basket ball and ⚽️soccer or daily long up hill hikes (but why?) can trigger this condition. Shin splints likes activities that are "all of a sudden", repetitive and new!

❌For instants, maybe you got a new spin bike and decided to ride it every day for the past 8 months with the intention of losing a few pounds. But later found out the bike was assembled wrong and you were pulling the feet straps with the tops of your feet with every cycle rather than using your knees and hips❌

OVERALL
---There is a muscle imbalance happening ---
☑️ Fire up those weaker intrinsic muscles (Toe crunches, extensions, and toe spreading)
☑️ Stretch the dominant muscles "reefing" on your shin(s)
☑️No need to drop all activity, just alter the impact and re-evaluate how your performing your activity.

Consult your Doctor, Physical Therapist or Massage therapist for a appropriate treatment plan. If you are looking to book in with a new Massage Therapist - Check out my page and book in!

This post is to spread awareness on human trafficking across Canada.

A man here in Calgary was offering women overseas Canadian citizenship in exchange to work out of his "massage clinic". These women were than forced to provide s*x services against their will in order to "earn" their citizenship. This man was recently caught and charged with human trafficking. (This information was provided by a clerk from the City of Calgary business licensing office)

Human Trafficking (HT)

- "[T]he recruitment, transportation, transfer,
harbouring or receipt of persons, by means of threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation."- ACT 1.1 Defining (HT)

The crime is so covert and troubling for CPS to capture these criminals. This is also problematic for our youth as some may be easily persuaded into relationships and groomed into exploitation.

If you walk into a massage location and something doesn't look or sound right, it probably isn't. I.E "open late - 2am, or a person(s) in distress". It is our duty to call and report anything out of the ordinary.

You can call 311 (City of Calgary) to have the location inspected or call the non-emergency Calgary police 403-266-1234.

Action Collation on Human Trafficking (ACT) Alberta has been conducting research in order to define and identify human trafficking. The definition of Human trafficking is broad. ACT and governing parties have classified: labor standards, work place bullying, domestic violence, prostitution and contract violations as trafficking. Considering all variations on the nature of this crime, we can take better care of each other and ourselves.

Information for this post was pulled from:

"A REPORT FOR THE CALGARY COMMUNITY
ACTION PLAN ON HUMAN TRAFFICKING (CCAP)"
"Community perspectives on the landscape
and realities of HUMAN TRAFFICKING IN CALGARY"

Feel free to copy this title into your search engine and view the full CCAP final report.

Lateral epicondylitis "Tennis Elbow" is one of the most common over use injuries. It involves the common extensor group attachment at the lateral side of the elbow (follow the thumb side of your forearm up to your elbow). The most affected muscle is extensor carpi radialis brevis.

The condition arises from overuse of actions that include gripping, wrist extension, radial deviation and forearm supination.

With both medial an lateral epicondylitis the areas go through a series of inflammation which can be painful during or after activity.

There are no conclusive treatment therapies for Tennis Elbow. However, you can re-evaluate your workplace, decrease the load of your grip and check in with your Doctor, physical therapist or massage therapist for ways to alleviate the pain an increase strength. If you go to the My Mayfair Mobile Page, you can set an appointment with a licensed massage therapist.

This study I pulled from pubmed Management of Lateral Epicondylitis: A Narrative Literature Review.

13/10/2022

Epicondylitis is a condition that occurs on either the medial or lateral side of the elbow.

If you suffer from: pain, tenderness, weakness or numbness and tingling at the medial elbow going into the forearm flexors - you may have a repetitive strain of your forearm flexors. This is also called "golfers elbow". This condition can be brought on by consistent grasping of the fingers and flexion of the wrist.

Life happens! We may carry ourselves with poor body mechanics with sports or improper positioning at work. The way we could heal ourselves from repetitive strain is to re-evaluate our mechanics. Find a coach or ask a friend who has more experience with the sport. Re-evaluate your work place and see how you can lessen the load on your fingers and wrists.

A professional recommendation: Consult your doctor, physical therapist or even massage therapist to get an idea of a suitable therapy. If you are looking for a therapist, there is a book now button on the My Mayfair Mobile Massage page.
