Sterling Silver Hummingbird Earrings by John Velten
now available on FirstNationsGallery.com

Valued for their beauty and charm, the Hummingbird is often said to bring good luck to those who spot them. They are not a common family symbol, however, the Hummingbird can be frequently spotted in Northwest Coast jewellery. Among Haida people of the Eagle clan, Hummingbird is a family crest, but it is not traditionally a major motif in the art. Its popularity today indicates that it has become a very important symbol of love and beauty.

by Grant Pauls
Sterling Silver and 18K Gold, diamond shaped laser cut.
The eye of the raven is 18K gold, the pendant measures 1.5″ x 1.5″.

To the Haida, Tlingit and Tsimshian, the Raven is the original Trickster, known for its relentless schemes, practical jokes and impulsive behaviour. Raven has the power of prophecy and is called Nankilslas or Nanagkislstlas in Haida, meaning “He-Whose-Voice-Is-True” (Shearar). Despite his selfish and lustful nature, Raven is supremely creative and productive. However, Raven is not the supreme Creator, but the Creator’s chief and original agent (Shearar).

Although it's role varies from one culture to the next, the Raven is a primary crest and among the most common of all Northwest Coast jewelry designs. As the Raven has the power to transform itself or other beings, he is kindred with transformation and transition.

In stories, the Raven is intelligent, curious and resourceful yet cunning, greedy and mischievous. He always follows his desire, and consequently often finds himself in trouble. But, trouble is where he does his best creative work! The Raven’s mischief has led to him being a cultural hero who is respected for placing the moon and the sun in the sky and discovering the first humans along the west coast.

Recognized for its short and dramatic life cycle, the Butterfly is often symbolic of change and renewal in Northwest Coast artwork.

The Butterfly symbolizes transformation, metamorphosis, beauty, balance, grace, and is often depicted in Pacific Northwest Coast Native storytelling as the companion, scout and spokesperson for the raven who leads Raven to food sources or uncovers the hiding places of treasure and luck.

Butterfly is a minor crest figure and sometimes appears simply as decoration because of its beauty and grace.

Although the Moon’s origin is greatly varied between cultures and stories, many northern tribes thank Raven for the gift of Moon. Sometimes, Moon is described as a chip off of Sun, which Raven clumsily dropped.

The Moon is often represented as the most powerful of beings, the protector and guardian of the earth, and a bestower of good luck and plentiful food. The representation of Moon among many tribes suggests that Moon is a female entity, one who is more delicate and serene than Sun (but not all would agree).
