✨ GRSJ Institute: 10th Anniversary Celebration & Inaugural Talk ✨

Join GRSJ Institute's first noted-speaker series event of the year on September 21st, featuring artist and academic Dr. Denise Ferreria da Silva. The evening will include opening remarks by the Institute’s new director Dr. Nora Angeles, a speech and Q&A session, as well as a champagne toast. 🥂💬 RSVP here, https://grsj.arts.ubc.ca/events/event/10th-anniversary-event/.

Learn more about Dr. Ferreria da Silva's talk “Negative Accumulation or The Racial Event That Which Happens Without Time," below:

"Negative accumulation, Denise Ferreira da Silva offers, invites a shift in thinking in line with the black and indigenous anticolonial, anticapitalist, and anti-imperialist radical traditions. As an image, it captures the trajectory of black and indigenous (of the Americas, Africa, and Asia and the Pacific) persons and populations in the past four hundred years or so. As such, like the image of unpayable debt, it supports the statement that decolonization is the only appropriate descriptor for the goal of any ethico-political program designed to confront global capital."

Happy Non-Binary Awareness Week! 💛 (Tweet via Jeffrey Marsh)

As we move through our day-to-day lives, we can make simple shifts to demonstrate our allyship to non-binary folks.

By introducing your pronouns you acknowledge:
✨ Non-binary people look and exist in different ways.
✨ You can’t assume someone’s pronouns based on their gender expression.
✨ Pronouns are one part of gender-affirming care.

Quote from Jia Tolentino of the New Yorker.

Today, we feel the fresh pain of the United State’s Supreme Court decision and face a renewed call to action for bodily autonomy, healthcare, and privacy. 💔

We also recognize the disproportionate affect this decision will have on low income, working class, BIPOC, immigrant, and rural communities.
