To all our loyal customers. Sadly, I am making this post to announce that we are unable to harvest Wild Rice this Fall. High water levels have caused all of the fields to flood (3ft+ high). As you can see in the photos below of this fall compared to previous years.

The Manoomin (Wild Rice) we pick has a natural cycle and this is ultimately out of our control. It is in the best interest for the sustainability of our crops to allow what seed has come up to go back in the water for next year.

Online orders will no longer be accepted (except 50 lbs bulk broken grain). There may still be some limited stock of long grain found locally at the Water Buffalo or the Treasure House and medium grain at Kreger's Krates.
Now for some good news!

We will be doing another apparel launch this fall with the extra time! Hats, T-shirts and Sweaters. Look for a post in the following months with an updated announcement.

For now our family will enjoy a slower paced fall, and take in all the seasonal change has to offer.

Miigwetch,
Devin + Family

Buckets Full!

Here is the speed head travelling over the Wild Rice on one of the Trout Lake tributaries, Rice Lake. We travel around 20 kilometres from the cabin to get here. One beaver Dam and a few rocks in the creek make this trip memorable every year. It takes a whole crew to make it happen, I couldn’t do it without them.

Springs approaching quickly. We took the chance yesterday to pull out a new to us boat! Everything went well and it won’t be long before we’re casting lines on the open water!

We came across a solo lynx. We got to watch him for about 10 minutes before he crossed the road in-front of us and disappeared into the bush.

The sun was shining, and the rice was falling off great on a mid september day! This plot of rice is located in Mud lake, along the Trout River between Little Trout Lake and Otter Lake.

We had a few people tag along to watch the ricing. Wade H. Mitchell came down and shared a few stories of his recollections from when Stan and Harold harvested the same bay some 40+ years earlier. They even took some rice back to Sandy Beach camp and saved us half a trip!

Flying Wild Rice Co. Est 2015

It was in the fall of 2013, our long time family friend, Stan Comber, was in a battle with poor health. A true entrepreneur of the north, Stan was the original commercial harvester of wild rice on Trout Lake. As Stan’s health faded he was faced with the difficulty of access to the remote location of Jackfish Bay. His cabin was showing its age after nearly 50 years of facing the elements. He asked my mother and her sister to purchase the cabin and make sure it was loved and taken care of.

I began spending my time in my Kookum’s home of Trout Lake at a very young age. I’m told stories of my mother, frantically chasing me down the trail as I ran into the bush. My infant sister in her arms. Never able to quite catch up to my ever curious mind and legs! It was at this young age my love for Trout Lake was established. I knew one day I wanted to be in Trout Lake, a “homestead” if you'd call it.

Work began on the cabin shortly after purchasing from Stan. A new roof, doors, tool shed all had to be built. In the spring my father, friends and I hauled in many trips of lumber and supplies across the frozen lake. We installed a new kitchen, added a deck as well as a new wood stove. Restoring a true palace of the north. My dad even went as far as to make a 2 hole outhouse...? At this point, the lush rice fields that lay adjacent to the cabin were an afterthought.

It began as a far fetched idea one late night with my family, a game of euchre and fried bannock on the table no less. To have such a amazing nutritious resource not being utilized was agreed by all to be a waste. The license was still valid, it had come with the purchase of the cabin. We decided then to try our luck at harvesting the Wild Rice.
