For our final installment of the arches series, we want to show you a place with plenty of structural arches from the 18th century. The first picture is the iwan of this mosque which presents a mix of exposed brickwork and mosaics with ornamental structural columns and capitals displayed on the second picture. The third photo shows the pishtaq, or a portal projecting from the facade of the building, decorated with calligraphy bands, glazed tilework, and geometric designs.

For our 4th installment of the arch series, we are taking you to an ancient land. Built in the 7th century, this church had 3 arches added to its portico in 1683. The structure is stone and I have a feeling will last longer than most of the buildings we build today.

Once upon a time there were 11 arches. Today, this structure stands with only 5 arches. Built in 1610, it has transformed over the years with additions, restorations and demolitions. Centuries later, it stands at the centre of a metropolis at the Plaza de Mayo. Can you tell where this Cabildo is?

We are going as far back as I can. This is the second largest unreinforced brick arch in the world. What you see is he remains of a Sasanian-era Persian monument, dated to c. the 3rd to 6th-century. Now it is theorized that this catenary arch was built without a centring! That means there was no formwork to support this massive structure during construction. The idea is that each brick was laid almost on a vertical with quick drying cement so that the rear wall could support it during construction.

Most arches now a days do not serve a structural purpose as they can be expensive to build, yet the result speaks for itself. This is a fascinating case of a creative and functional use of the cantilever. The story goes that the architects, tasked with designing a 100 unit building, could only fit 87 units in the blueprint, and limited by local zoning regulations could not go higher or increase the footprint. So what did they do? Cantilever!
