Today, August 1st , Nova Scotia will mark Emancipation Day for the first time. This recognizes the Slavery Abolition Act of 1834, which would lead to the freeing of enslaved people of African descent in most of the British Empire.

This is our shared history, and we encourage all Nova Scotians to reflect and learn about our province’s past, and the impact that anti-Black racism still has on people of African descent.

Together, let’s work towards making Nova Scotia a more socially just place for everyone.
