Athabasca County Alberta on YOLO Nomads 12/07/2023

Our regional tourism and economic development committee partnered with Yolo Nomads to help bring awareness to the unique community that we call home.

In their recent newsletter they talked about the rising tide of small town living:

"A wave of change is emerging from the high-rise apartments and bustling streets of the city. The roar of traffic is giving way to the tranquil hum of nature as more and more people swap city life for the idyllic charm of small towns.

But this isn't just a trend, it's a fundamental lifestyle shift.

A decision to embrace a richer, more rewarding future, replete with a sense of community and a break from the relentless urban race. New initiatives are now breathing life into this change, facilitating rewarding work opportunities and nurturing a sense of connection in close-knit communities."

Thanking the good Lord for the rain we have recieved lately 🙏

Due to the recent weather conditions, Athabasca County has lifted the fire ban. A FIRE RESTRICTION remains in effect for that area of the County outside of the Forest Protection Area.

Under this restriction:
•Existing fire permits are suspended and no new fire permits will be issued
•Safe wood campfires within fire rings in campgrounds are allowed

Prohibited:
•All outdoor wood fires are banned on public lands, including backcountry and random camping areas.
•The use of fireworks and exploding targets are also prohibited.

Allowed:
•Safe wood campfires (including charcoal briquettes) on private lands and in County campgrounds.
•Backyard fire pits, charcoal briquette barbeques.
•Propane/ natural gas powered appliances.
•Indoor wood fires contained within a device with a chimney and spark arrestor.
•Cooking, warming and lighting devices – all devices must be CSA approved and used as per manufacturer’s standards.
•The County urges, if possible, that any fires be on a sand or gravel base and a responsible adult and extinguishing supplies be present at all times.
•The ban on OHV vehicles has been lifted. Athabasca County urges everyone to use care when working or driving in grassy areas and be mindful of debris collecting on hot exhaust which could result in the ignition of a fire.

Never leave a campfire unattended. Soak it, stir it and soak it again until cool to the touch to ensure it is extinguished. If you see a wildfire, report it immediately by calling 310-FIRE.

The fire restriction will remain in effect until conditions improve.

Please note that as part of routine maintenance, TC Energy will be performing a blowdown periodically from May 26th-30th east of HWY 63 on North Skeleton Beach Road (T652). A blowdown is the act of safely releasing natural gas from a pipeline system in a controlled manner so work can be done safely on depressurized facilities. A load roaring sound may occur when the natural gas is released, although tools will be employed by TC Energy to minimize this noise whenever possible. The estimated duration of each blowdown is 20 minutes each from 8am-2pm from May 26-30th.
Residents living in close proximity to the planned blowdown location will receive notification of the blowdown prior to the work beginning.
