February as everyone knows is Black History/African Heritage Month, and like previous years we like to use this month to share, honour and celebrate the lives of Black Excellence from across Canada and our historically black communities in Cape Breton.
Please feel free to comment or DM with any one in your life that embodies and we will try to feature them.
Follow along with us all month because Black History is Canadian History.

We will create 3 African Diva Ornaments with facilitator Karen King.

You may remember a while back we shared that Whitney was on of the hub leaders of the Culture Exchange.
Co-led by Cape Breton Centre for Craft & Design and the Island Food Network, the Culture Exchange has set out to create grassroots opportunities for women and gender diverse individuals in Unama’ki – Cape Breton to connect and learn together, while laying the groundwork for employment opportunities in the culture sector, or potential culture-based enterprises.
We are excited to share 3 of the 4 workshops planned so far. Feel free to share 🙂

Day 22• Carl “Campy” Crawford
Today we celebrate Campy Crawford. Campy is featured on our UNITE LIKE WHITNEY PIER designs.
When we started our design process, Campy was one we knew we 100% wanted to feature. I (Whitney) was lucky enough to have known and love Campy, he was the most loving and fun man. I could go on for hours with heartwarming stories.
To the community of Whitney Pier (and broader, I’m sure) Campy was a pillar of inspiration and aspiration.
Day 20• Ferguson “Fergie” Arthur Jenkins
Today we celebrate Fergie Jenkins. Jenkins is featured on our Black Canadian Excellence designs.
Fergie played Major League Baseball from 1965 to 1983, playing the majority of his career for the Chicago cubs.
We had such an overwhelming response to our products this week that we had to dedicate the week to getting orders out the door. Thank you all for your support!

Day 19• Phyllis Arthur
Today we celebrate Ms. Phyllis Arthur. Phyllis is featured on our Unite Like Whitney Pier designs.
Phyllis retired from Jamieson Elementary after teaching for 33 years in our community and remains an inspiration for all of us.

Each year Tom’s Legacy is honoured with the presentation of the Tom Miller Human Rights Award
Day 10• Portia White
Today we celebrate the incredible Portia White. Portia is featured on our CANADIAN BLACK EXCELLENCE designs.
Prior to becoming a full time singer, Portia was a teacher.
Day 9• John “Hubba” Parris
Today we celebrate John “Hubba” Parris, local music legend. Hubba is featured on our UNITE LIKE WHITNEY PIER designs.
Hubba is celebrating 60+years in the music industry this year!
Day 8• Willie O’Ree
Today we celebrate the barrier breaking Willie O’Ree. Willie is featured on our CANADIAN BLACK EXCELLENCE designs.
Born in New Brunswick, Willie played winger for the Boston Bruins. Willie remained the only Black player in the league until 1974!
Day 7• Jonathan Skeete
Today we celebrate the inspiration that is Jonathan Skeete. Jonathan is featured on our UNITE LIKE WHITNEY PIER designs.

Day 6 • Viola Desmond
Today we celebrate the ground breaking activist Viola Desmond. Viola is featured on our Canadian Black Excellence designs
An inspiration in more ways than one. Founding a salon, cosmetic line and beauty school on top of her history making fight for justice
Day 5• Clotilda Douglas-Yakimchuck
Today we celebrate Nursing pioneer, Clotilda Douglas-Yakimchuck. Clotilda is featured on our UNITE LIKE WHITNEY PIER designs.
Many firsts can be associated with Clotilda’s name but if I’m certain that if you speak to any Whitney Pier residents they would just speak on her amazing spirit and love for her community.
Day 4• Mary Ann Shadd
Today we celebrate Mary Ann Shadd, anti-slavery activist, journalist, publisher, teacher, and lawyer. Mary Ann is featured on our CANADIAN BLACK EXCELLENCE design.
The things Mary Ann accomplished in her lifetime is truly remarkable, we urge you to look a little further into her story!
Day 3 • Joe ‘Whirly’ Worrell
Today to honour a true community leader and sportsman, loved by all-Mr. Joe Worrell, featured on our Unite like Whitney Pier shirt.
Known for his many accomplishments as a baseball player and choir member but for anyone to had the privilege of knowing Joe, I’m certain they would say the thing most memorable was his warm personality and ability to make every he spoke to feel uplifted
Day 2 • Hon. Jean Augustine
Today we want to highlight the trailblazer that is Jean Augustine. Her quote of ‘Black History is not just for Black people-Black History is Canadian History” served as inspiration for the arm quote this years CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY sweatshirts and hoodies.
Today is the first day of African Heritage/ Black History Month and while we are firm believers in celebrating Black History all 365 days of the year, we want to use this month to showcase the POWERFUL people featured on our products, from our community and more.
As a black owned business, this month tends to be our busier time so we want to use our bit of extra traffic to educate and celebrate these amazing people.

In celebration of African Heritage Month 2023 we have created a collection of new and classic POWERFUL. designs.
Our CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY and BLACK HISTORY IS CANADIAN HISTORY. designs are at the forefront of this collection because as Hon. Jean Augustine once stated "Black history is not just for black people-Black history is Canadian History. This design is available in a classic black and white as well as a colourful design featuring the Pan African colours.
We have a new machine and we have some awesome new products ready for the new year…
But we wanted to see if any one would be interested in Christmas ornaments in the mean time, while we get used to the new program.
