When someone dies in Ontario, their estate may be subject to several taxes, depending on the value of their assets and how those assets are distributed. Here are some of the main taxes that may be owed:
1. Estate Administration Tax (EAT): This is a tax that is charged on the value of the estate's assets when an application is made for a Certificate of Appointment of Estate Trustee (also known as probate). The tax is calculated based on the total value of the estate and is charged at a rate of $15 for every $1,000 of estate value up to $50,000, and $5 for every $1,000 of estate value over $50,000.
2. Capital Gains Tax: If the estate includes assets that have appreciated in value, such as real estate, stocks, or investments, the estate may be subject to capital gains tax. Capital gains tax is calculated on the increase in value of the asset from the time it was acquired to the time it was sold or transferred.
3. Income Tax: The deceased's estate may also be subject to income tax on any income earned by the deceased during the year of their death, as well as any income earned by the estate after their death.
4. Corporate Tax: If the deceased owned a business, the business may be subject to corporate tax on any income earned by the business.
It's important to note that some assets, such as RRSPs and RRIFs, may pass directly to named beneficiaries and may not be subject to probate or estate administration tax. Additionally, there are various strategies that can be used to minimize or defer taxes, such as gifting, establishing trusts, or making charitable donations. It's always a good idea to consult with a financial or legal professional to discuss your specific situation and explore your options for minimizing taxes owed upon death.

Rogers Communications Inc.’s proposed takeover of Shaw Communications Inc. valued at 26 Billion dollars will go ahead after it received the final sign-off it needed from Industry Francois-Philippe Champagne.
The transactions between Rogers, Shaw and Quebecor are now expected to close by April 7, 2023
Among the conditions, Rogers must also invest $1 billion in broadband internet access, at least $2.5 billion in its western Canada 5G network and $3 billion in expansion projects. Rogers must also establishing a western headquarters in Calgary, and maintain it for a minimum of 10 years, while creating 3,000 new jobs in Western Canada. Non-compliance to the agreements can cost Vidéotron up to $200 million in financial damages and up to $1 billion for Rogers. Vidéotron is also barred from transferring the Freedom Mobile licences for 10 years.
Shaw and Freedom Mobile are just the latest dominos to fall in the rapid ongoing collapse of competition in Canada’s telecom sector. The merger follows Bell’s acquisition of Ebox, Distributel and Primus; Vidéotron’s purchase of V-Media; Telus’s acquisition of Start.ca and Altima; and Cogeco’s acquisition of Oxio, among others.

Around half of all insolvencies filed in 2022 were by millennials, despite only accounting for less than 27 per cent of the Canadian population aged 18 and older, according to a new study.
The average insolvent millennial is just 33 years old, yet they are 1.7 times more likely than Baby Boomers and 1.4 times as likely as Generation X to file insolvency, relative to the population
An overall trend since 2016 has the average insolvent borrower continuing to get younger, with student loan debt and extremely high-cost loans being the main drivers of their insolvency
AVERAGE MILLENNIAL DEBT
Unsecured debt obligations, meaning debt that is not otherwise backed by an asset, pushed millennials toward insolvency during the year. The age group had an average unsecured debt load of $47,283 in 2022.

Title insurance is a type of insurance that protects a property owner against financial loss or legal issues that may arise from defects or challenges to the ownership of their property.
Here are a few reasons why someone may choose to buy title insurance:
1. Protection against hidden title defects: Title insurance covers the policyholder against hidden title defects, such as outstanding liens, undisclosed heirs, or forged documents, that may not have been discovered during the property purchase process.
2. Peace of mind: Title insurance provides peace of mind to property owners by ensuring that they will be protected in the event of any title-related issues that may arise in the future.
3. Financial protection: Title insurance protects property owners from financial losses that may result from title-related issues, such as the cost of defending against a legal challenge to their ownership or the cost of clearing up title defects.
4. Required by lenders: Some lenders require title insurance as a condition of financing a property purchase. This provides protection for the lender's investment in the property and helps to ensure that the property can be sold if the borrower defaults on the loan.
5. One-time cost: Unlike other types of insurance, title insurance is a one-time cost that provides coverage for as long as the policyholder or their heirs own the property.
Overall, title insurance provides important protection for property owners and can help to ensure that they can enjoy their property without fear of legal or financial problems related to their ownership.

Online Remote/Virtual NOTARIZATION
Ontario has passed laws allowing document notarizations to take place remotely - known as Remote Online Notarization (RON), or virtual notarization.
Audio-visual technology, such as webcams and remote signature platforms, allow the notary and the signer to conduct the identification and verification process.
Just like a traditional notary public, the remote notary serves as an impartial witness to the signing or authentication of a legal document.
Some typical personal or business documents that require notarization include wills, deeds, trusts, commercial leases, insurance policies and surety bonds.
With remote online notarization, neither the signing party nor the notary needs to leave the comfort of their own home or office to have a document notarized.
