Switching from the cross cradle to the cradle hold. Having trouble? 1. Make sure you’re not moving your breast. If you are, it will fall out of baby’s mouth when you let go. 2. When removing your first arm, slide it towards baby’s feet (not up towards your face). What breastfeeding or chest feeding positions did you find the most comfortable? #breastfeeding #lactationconsultant #ibclc
Wondering if baby is actually getting milk at the breast? This video shows a clear drop in the chin and pause as the mouth fills up with milk and baby swallows. When the flow of milk slows and you’re no longer seeing those pauses in the chin, add breast compressions. If there’s no drinking with compressions, it’s time to switch sides. Repeat the whole process again on the 2nd side and keep going, offering more than 2 sides as needed until baby is full. #breastfeeding #lactationconsultant #ibclc Repost from @thebadassbreastfeeder using repost_now_app - Baby sounds from tyoung250 😍😍😍
Galactogogues are “substances that promote lactation” (Wikipedia). SOME galactogogues MAY be helpful to you in your lactation journey by increasing prolactin - the milk making hormone but here are some key points to remember: 1. They won’t help without frequent EFFECTIVE milk removal (well latched baby or well fitting pump) 2. Not all galalctogogues are the same. If someone is suggesting one for you, they should be able to provide evidence showing its EFFECTIVENESS. 3. If you have concerns about your milk production, get a full breastfeeding or pumping assessment. Don’t assume that galactogogues alone will solve any issues (see #1). There are many cultures that prepare certain foods for new parents to support milk production, and this can be a wonderful way to encourage a new family’s lactation journey. Always check with your healthcare provider before taking any medication or supplement. #moremilk #lactationconsultant #breastfeeding
One more time for the cheap seats in the back: Drinking more water does NOT make more human milk! The ONLY way to make more milk is to ensure that milk is effectively removed, frequently with either: 1. A well latched baby 2. A well fitting pump Lactation is multi factoral so there can be other factors affecting your lactation but you NEED effective milk removal to make more milk. If you’re lactating, drink to thirst and you’ll get all the liquids you need. #breastfeeding #lactation #lactationconsultant

This is Citrine, our very calm (and neutered) foster rabbit. Seeing Citrine got me thinking about hormones and the many roles they play in lactation. Oxytocin isn’t just responsible for the milk ejection reflex (or letdown). It can also increase skin temperature, create a feeling of calm and even dull our response to stress or pain. One study looked at stress responses in lactating vs non lactating women and found that cortisol (a stress hormone) was lower in the lactating group.

Can I get pregnant while lactating? According to the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine (Protocol 13) if you meet 3 specific criteria (see below) your chances of getting pregnant are 1-2%. Repost from @lllc100milehousewilliamslake using repost_now_app - Reposted from @shellytaftibclc Many parents have asked about the delay of ovulation and potential delay in fertility with breastfeeding. There is a natural delay in fertility that occurs when breastfeeding, called the Lactational Amenorrhea Method, or LAM. LAM can delay the onset of ovulation and therefore prevent pregnancy, and is estimated to be 98 - 99% effective, however ALL THREE criteria must apply. 1. Your baby is under six months. As time passes and your baby grows, breastfeeding becomes less reliable at preventing pregnancy. 2. Your cycles have not yet resumed. If you are already started menstruation, then breastfeeding is not enough to prevent pregnancy. 3. Baby must be exclusively breastfeeding around the clock. If baby is sleeping through the night, or being supplemented with formula, other liquids, or solid foods, then breastfeeding will no longer be effective at preventing pregnancy. The LAM method is not 100% dependable, so many parents choose to use a back up method of birth control. Be sure to speak to your provider about which birth control method is best for you. #motherhoodstruggles #newbabyboy #nursingmom #breastfedbaby #breastfeedingclass #motherhood #igbabies #newborn #ittakesavillage #momlife #newbaby #parenthoodmoments #breastfeedingmom #instababies #momssupportmoms #workingmom #motherhoodquotes #baby #motherhoodrising #postpartumanxiety #capturingmotherhood #lactationsupport #motherhoodthroughinstagram #babiesofig #babies #firsttimemama #parenthood_unveiled #breastfeedinghelp #milkmaker #normalizebreastfeeding
