"Leave No Calf Behind"

I used 4 reference photos for this painting. The border collie in lower right was an afterthought. It gives it a story...the rancher and his herd dog are searching for a lost calf. It is getting dark soon. He has his rifle at the ready incase they encounter any predators.

It's that time of year when I get inspired to paint snow. Lots of snow! And since we just got a big fresh dump of the white stuff overnight I was even more in the mood to just stay inside my cozy studio and paint.

A few progress pics of my latest project... an oil portrait of my wife and biggest fan, Darlene. I began this one 4 days ago by doing a wash/underpainting on Monday night, then have chipped away at it in the evenings after work a few hours at a time. Still a lot to do but feeling pretty good about the way it is turning out so far. :)
