"Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine..." ✨️🎵✨️🎵✨️

Wow, it's only been a short while that I've been formally conducting lessons, but the feedback and support has been overwhelmingly positive. I can't thank you all enough - especially my new students!

Earlier today, a very special student attended her first lesson. As much as I hope that she got some valuable instruction and experience out of our time together, for my part, I have spent most of the day since our lesson feeling totally invigorated, blissful, and grateful.

To paraphrase a Zen Buddhist proverb, "When the student is ready, the teacher appears". However, I found through many years of my previous teaching career - and now through private singing lessons - that the inverse is equally (and more often, from my perspective) true: "When the teacher is ready, the student appears".

Even when there is a definite and mutually understood student / teacher dynamic, we often think of it (and learning in general) as a one way street, if you will. The reality is that the student - any student - is always teaching the teacher, as well. Learning never stops, no matter your age or level of experience, and a dedicated student will always bring out the best in their teacher, for no two students are alike and each of us learns in our own unique ways.

Ultimately, to help someone learn to bring themselves from "I would like to learn how to sing but I don't think I can" or "I like to sing but I don't like the sound of my voice" to "Wow, I can't believe I sang that!" or "That felt and sounded amazing!" is rewarding beyond measure and description... it's like a series of continuous "pinch me" moments for the teacher who is always learning from his students.
