We have been seeing lots of drakes out this season. Mostly brown drakes so far. Keep your eye out for them. They are the largest of the mayflies.
We are lucky enough to get the eastern drakes on some of our Alberta rivers, and boy do we look forward to it. Usually we see them start to emerge in late July, early august in our basin. When they start to emerge in large numbers, the fish will key into them and hunt them down like you wouldn't believe. It's a large meal for a fish and once they've started eating drakes, they can't stop.
-
Then once they've emerged into the dun form of their life cycle they will mate, and then fall dead back onto the water in what's called a 'spinner fall'. These are very exciting times as the fish will go nuts for them late into the night.
