HOW WE CAN FIX YOUR FAILING WINDOW PAINT:

Peeling paint on window frames is one of the most common problems we see in the painting industry. To deliver a quality service, we need to know the root cause of the problem as well as the solution.

The two main causes of failing paint on window frames are a high presence of moisture, which can be introduced through direct rainfall, snow and condensation, or an existing coats breakdown caused by age, harmful UV rays breaking down the protective resins in the paint, as well as continued abuse from the harsh Canadian climate. Once water has pe*****ted the painting surface through either a crack in the paint, a joint that has not been properly sealed or a gap between the siding and the window frame, the bare wood below the surface naturally absorbs it. This will then expand and contract with temperature changes, forcing the paint from the surface.

SOLUTION
This is where we come in:
Our crew will begin by preparing all windows thoroughly, before applying any paint, to ensure that you receive a professional paintjob that is designed to last. The process will be to:
1. Scrape all loose paint from the window frames. We use long handled scrapers and plenty of elbow grease.
2. Sand the rough edges with 60 or 80 grit sandpaper in order to smooth them down as much as possible
3. Wash the window frame with light soap and water. The purpose is not to soak the frame, it is to remove any loose dirt or sand particles. This is usually done using a damp cloth and TSP.
4. Once dry, we will spot prime the bare wood. This seals the wood and provides an ideal surface for the finish coat to adhere to
5. In a deluxe quote, to avoid future moisture problems, all cracks and joints will be thoroughly caulked, and all failing putty will be removed and replaced
6. We are now ready to paint. Our finish coat will be of the highest quality paint available It will contain top quality resins and pigments, and have additives to prevent chalking, fading, mildew and fungal growth. If you are not changing colours, it is likely that one coat will be sufficient for aesthetics, however two coats will guarantee a longer life of the paint job

HOW TO TACKLE THE CHALKY COATING ON THE SIDING OF YOUR HOME:

A lot of homes with siding may begin to see a film of white and dusty residue appear on their surfaces after some years of exposure to the elements. UV inhibitors are a component of the paint on this siding. This element will break down overtime and this is where you will see the chalky residue on the surface.

Not only will you see a residue, but the original color of the siding may also start to fade because that component in the paint that protects it from the sun is deteriorating. That is why every so often you should wash and repaint your siding to restore its color and protection from UV light.

What I like to do with my team in order to solve this problem is start with a TSP wash. This is a tri sodium phosphate cleanser that will rid your siding of any chalk and dirt but will not deteriorate your actual siding. We scrub this product on the entire surface of siding and wash it off with a hose. Once the surface is dry we assess its condition; looking for areas where the paint has completely deteriorated. In these cases we apply a primer. After that we apply two coats of exterior paint and your siding will look fully restored and refreshed.

Although, this is not so simple for Vinyl siding. One thing many people do not know is that the plastic is chemically made in conjunction with the factory paint. For instance if your siding was made with a light grey paint, it must be repainted the same or lighter color. The product was made with a limit on the amount of heat it can absorb. If painted any darker, the siding will absorb more heat than it can handle causing it to warp. This is not the case for metal or aluminum siding. However, taking this precaution before painting your vinyl is very important.

6 STEPS TO PAINTING YOUR TEXTURED OR POPCORN CEILING:

1- Protect the floor underneath this ceiling to prevent any stains or accidents.

2- Brush away any dust or debris that is stuck on the surface of the ceiling. You can use a feather duster or a vacuum in order to ensure that the paint you apply will stick to the surface and adhere well.

3- Tape around the tops of any light fixtures and place plastic wrap around the entire fixture to protect it.

4- Using a brush, start cutting the edges of the ceiling about 2-3 inches in and right up to the edge where it meets the wall. Creating a straight line can be much more difficult on a textured ceiling. A trick is to take a flat head screwdriver and lightly run it along the edge. This will leave a flatter surface in the corner for creating perfect cut lines.

5- A thick, high-quality roller is best for painting the remainder of the ceiling. Rolling this ceiling is much different than a wall. Use light pressure during application and make sure not to over-saturate the ceiling with paint. Use long strokes and lapped edges. Don't roll over the same area multiple times and keep your roller wet with paint.

6- Repeat steps 4 and 5 for however many coats you would like. To prevent streaks, paint in a perpendicular direction of the way you painted with the roller the last time. Make sure the last coat of paint is rolled towards the direction of any windows to also prevent any lines from being seen, if any.

There are a few other things you should know before you attempt to start painting your popcorn ceiling. A flat or matte finish is best for a ceiling as it will not reflect any light. If you have never painting your popcorn ceiling before you MUST use an oil-based primer on the surface and let it completely dry before applying a coat of water-based paint. This is because the water in the paint can soak into the material on the ceiling, weigh it down and cause it to fall off your ceiling. If any stains are left on the ceiling these should also be sealed with a stain blocking primer before you apply your two coats of paint to prevent the stain from bleeding through your fresh coats.

HOW TO RESTORE YOUR GRAYING FENCE OR DECK FOR A NATURAL LOOK:

Bare wood is at the risk of breaking down at a much more exponential rate than if it is protected by stain. The cost of replacing this wood is much higher than the cost of protecting it every few years with.

Most home owners try to solve this problem with pressure washing. Often this technique can effectively clean wood surfaces but there is also the risk of it ruining your deck or fence if it's not used properly. If used with too much jet pressure or too close to the surface, it can break down your wood and cause splinters to come to the surface.

One way I like to tackle this problem in my business is by using a brightening and restoring solution. We scrub this product onto the woods surface and let it sit until the desired result appears.

This not only improves stain pe*******on by opening the woods pores but it also helps to prolong the life of your deck by removing stains from mold, mildew and algae - which will further break down your wood over time.

We then wash off the remaining solution with a low pressure hose, let the deck dry and then sand away any imperfections.

Once the deck is completely dry is when the deck is ready for staining; this way the stain can fully pe*****te and soak into the wood. Apply your semi-transparent stain and enjoy your renewed deck or fence.
