She is an internationally known speaker and co-author of award-winning books that are classics on plant-based nutrition, most with Brenda Davis, and now in 14 languages. Their most recent are The Kick Diabetes Cookbook and also Becoming Vegan: Comprehensive Edition, written for dietitians, MDs, and other health professionals, with 620 pages and entirely referenced. Half as long is Becoming Vegan: Express Edition. Vesanto is a personal and government consultant and has taught nutrition at the University of British Columbia and at Seattle’s Bastyr University.

We've had a few people ask us about 'ex-vegans' lately. We've heard about a few people leaving veganism for health reasons which is really sad to hear about as it is completely unnecessary. There are vegan ways to address every health issue.

There are actually way more people thriving on plant-based diets than ditching the diet, we just don't hear about them because those stories don't make the headlines, or the people involved are not influencers. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you are vegan and are experiencing health issues, try to find a practitioner that is also vegan and specializes in plant-based nutrition. We've heard about too many people getting advice to start eating fish or bone broth etc. Always get a second opinion from a plant-based expert so that you know all of your options.

In our opinion, the people that leave veganism just don't really want to be vegan anymore or they haven't taken the time to find out how to do it properly.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Hey VGang! Do you know what humans and guinea pigs have in common?🍊

We both lack the ability to synthesize our own Vitamin C, which means we have to rely on an outside source - ie. fresh plant foods (bats and other primates also have this in common). 🐒
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We cannot make it because we lack the enzyme l-gulonolactone oxidase, other mammals still have this enzyme so they are able to synthesize their own Vitamin C.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We may have lost this enzyme because Vitamin C has been so prevalent in our diets throughout history, with people from cold Northern regions relying on infusions of pine needles and rose hips to get enough.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In addition to the many important roles in the body (antioxidant, immune function, bone health, iron & folate metabolism - just to name a few), Vitamin C plays an essential part in collagen production.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Eating collagen protein (this only comes from animal products) does NOT make collagen in the body. It is only supplying amino acids, and these amino acids are abundant in plant foods as well.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What is super important for supporting collagen production in the body are what I call the collagen 'builders' and Vitamin C is an essential one. Other important builders include silica and other trace minerals, and a variety of antioxidants.
