Boreal Museum
Based in Thunder Bay, The Boreal Museum is nestled in the heart of Northwestern Ontario.
The Boreal Museum science shop is closed today (Sunday October 13th) to spend time with our families.
Have a great weekend and we hope to see you all Thursday!
Have you ever seen rocks that glow under ultraviolet (UV) light? These fascinating minerals, known as UV reactive rocks, exhibit stunning colors and patterns when exposed to UV light. This phenomenon occurs due to specific minerals in the rocks that fluoresce, absorbing UV rays and re-emitting them as visible light. πͺ¨π
One of the most popular UV reactive rocks is the Yooperlite! Found mostly in Michigan's Upper Peninsula and the Great Lakes Area, Yooperlites are a type of syenite rock that contains the mineral sodalite, which glows a bright, vibrant orange under UV light. These unique stones are not only visually captivating but also a favorite among rockhounds and collectors.
Why do they glow? The fluorescence happens when the minerals absorb UV radiation and emit light at longer wavelengths, creating that eye-catching glow.
Next time you visit us, come see ours! πβ¨

It's Friday the 13th and we think it would be a great time for a FOSSIL FRIDAY!
This fossil features the large vertebrae from the extinct fish called Enchodus, a group of ray finned fish common in the Upper Cretaceous!
These fish were know for their very large protruding "fangs" and sometimes referred to as the Sabre-toothed Herring! We think it's giving vampire fish energy. π§π
These fish may have survived a little past the K-T Extinction that saw the loss of many groups including the non-avian dinosaurs!
This fossil specimen was collected in the Kem Kem Fossil beds of Morocco where they can be found with some frequency!
