Critical times in the entertainment industry are upon us. This past week American Actors Union: SAG-AFTRA went on strike. They join the Writers Guild of America who have been on strike since May 2nd. This has resulted in a shutdown of the entertainment industry in the USA. Canada has also been affected due to its presence as a hub for American productions
and has all but come to a screeching hault.

Many of the issues of concern are consistent for both actors and writers. These include concern over AI replacing jobs, unfair base pay and lack of residuals for actors due to the prominence of streamer content and difficult requirements for actors to even receive simple things like health insurance. It’s a very difficult career to succeed in as an actor or writer and many are struggling to stay afloat. This strike is tough on them, everybody wants to get back to work, but when the conditions are fair. This is just the tip of the iceberg that the studio heads and streamers need to address to have everyone come back to work.

We Canadian actors and writers support our talented actors in writers in the USA. Vancouver Film & TV Tours and Toronto Film & TV Tours is owned and operated by local actors, providing them with valuable additional income during these trying and uncertain times. It’s also an opportunity for them to share their stories, passions and experience in working this industry with tourists and locals alike. We aim to educate the public on the industries current issue as well as showcase the countless projects shot in the past here, with an eye on a better future for all creatives alike. photo credit: Mike Blake, Reuters taken outside the Netflix offices in Los Angelis, California July 14th.

Big news out of Vancouver today with it being announced that HBO’s The Last of Us will shoot in Vancouver for part of Season 2. Courtesy of and

After filming season 1 in the Calgary area that saw overwhelming success , season 2 is meant to take place in the Pacific Northwest (namely Seattle) area. Vancouver had doubled as Seattle in several other shows and movies such as 50 Shades of Grey, 50/50, Izombie, Twilight, among others.

When it comes to tax incentives and strong US dollar, Vancouver is an economical option when it comes to making a budget go further for productions. Perhaps you’ll see a Last of Us tour in Vancouver one day. 🤩

Did you know? CW’s the Flash has filmed most of the series throughout Vancouver and the lower mainland. Many of Vancouvers landmarks were transformed into various places in the fictitious Central City.

Such examples were BC Place Stadium as STAR Labs and Central City Stadium, Vancouver Library as Central City Bank and STAR Labs, CBC Vancouver as the courtyard of STAR Labs and Vancouver Art Gallery Central City Downtown Plaza just to name a few.

After 9 seasons and nearly a decade of filming, the show is finishing up its final season this spring. Many other CW Series are finishing their final seasons in the city with the networks recent rebranding. This of course is making room for several new series on major U.S.A and Canadian Networks now filming in Vancouver, further cementing it as the go to place for the film industry. Check out our guide in season 8 and come learn about this show and many others on our Hollywood North Tour.

Did You Know? Adaptation of Alfred Hitchcocks classic film, Psycho, inspired the hit TV series Bates Motel. This series was shot in Aldergrove, BC (1 hour outside of Vancouver). The set was built on some land located at 1070 272nd St. Aldergrove. In between the shooting of the successful 5 seasons, the windows were boarded up to prevent any diehard fans from making the motel their own.

After the completion of the series, the set was torn down in February 2017. You may recognize the actor who played Norman Bates (Freddie Highmore) who currently stars in another hit tv series, also shot in Vancouver. This being The Good Doctor, where Highmore plays the lead- Dr. Shaun Murphy which is currently in Season 7.

Happy Halloween from us at Vancouver Film & TV Tours! 🎃 Today, we celebrate some of the horror movies shot in Vancouver and surrounding area.

The classic horror comedy, Scary Movie used the exterior of Victoria Highschool on Vancouver Island. Fun fact, the fountain seen in the movie was not apart of the school but was created for the film to further spoof Scream. Other shots of this movie took place in Richmond on Moncton Street, such as the Movie Theatre scenes and where officer Doofy is revealed to be the mastermind behind the crimes.

In Friday The 13th, Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan, Vancouver poses as New York City. It used an Alleyway in Gastown and Brittania Beach.

In Black Christmas, Coquitlams Riverview Hospital was used as the Clark Sanitarium in the movie. This location is a very common film spot.

In Cabin in The Woods, BCIT’s Aerospace technology campus and a home on 5th & Trafalger was used. Also, the woods was shot at Coquihalla Canyon Park.

Finally, Blade Trinity used Vancouvers iconic Marine building which is the scene where Blade jumps!

What’s your favourite horror movie you will be watching this weekend?

A 90 minute drive from Vancouver, BC is the town of Hope. It served as the main filming location for the classic movie: Rambo First Blood starring Sylvester Stallone. This credit is a point of pride for many local residents and further displayed by a statue of John Rambo in the middle of town. Many Rambo fans flock to Hope every year and this past weekend, the movies 40th anniversary was celebrated.

The movie was meant to take place in the fictitious town of Hope, Washington rather than the real town of Hope, BC. The film also has strong Canadian roots as it was adapted by Canadian author’s David Morrell novel and directed by Canadian Ted Kotcheff. Many consider this movie the birth of Hollywood North.

Did you know? The Percy Jackson franchise has a history of filming in Vancouver. From filming the first movie-Percy Jackson & The Lightning Thief filmed mainly in Vancouver in 2009 (which starred Pierce Bronson-James Bond himself as Mr.Brunner).

It then continued with the second film, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters which featured a variety of places in North Vancouver and downtown as well. One scene is meant to take place in Washington, DC but was actually filmed in Vancouver using a building a green screen/after effects. Our guide was an actor in the film. Today, this story continues with the new series by Disney + Percy Jackson and the Olympians filming in Vancouver this fall and this past summer. Stay tuned for more from this exciting series.
