June is Cataract Awareness Month!

***
Raising awareness about eye health is always vital. Cataracts can be subtle, and certain individuals, such as those with diabetes or hypertension, may be predisposed to developing them over time. However, there are certain lifestyle modifications that can help minimize the risk of developing cataracts, such as restricting alcohol and to***co usage, as well as adopting a healthier diet.

The most crucial thing to do for your eyes is to wear sunglasses with UV protection to limit your exposure to ultraviolet radiation, which contributes to the formation of cataracts.

Do your lenses look like this?

This is a crazed lens - this effect is often caused by heat exposure or by using a cleaning product which is not meant for prescription lenses. There have been patients who have said they clean their lenses with window cleaner - please don't do this!

An anti-reflective (AR) coating is a thin, clear layer or layers applied to the surface of the lens. The pros of an AR coated lens are both subjective - noticed by the wearer and objective - noticed by the observer.
Subjective advantages include - better light transmission, decreased glare, also improved vision during the day & night time.
Objective advantages include - the loss of surface lens reflections, also known as the window effect. Without lens reflections the wearer's eyes become more visible. With reflections on the lens being reduced and the lens appearing less visible, AR coatings can make thick lenses appear thinner.

The slit-lamp is a high magnification microscope used to examine all of the structures of the human eye. It uses a bright light to get a closer look at the front and interior of the eye. We can even magnify to examine individual white blood cells during an inflammatory reaction, from the surface of your eye lids and the roots of your eye lashes to the crystalline lens and the retina itself. This is an amazing tool that your optometrist will use when assessing the health of your eyes and identifying many eye diseases, including cataracts, macular degeneration, retinal detachment and dry eye syndrome. The slit-lamp is arguably one of the most crucial instruments in an eye clinic.

Some of these eye conditions have a negative impact on your eye health, which is why it is critical that you continue to have our eyes examined as often as possible. We take your eye health very seriously; please contact us by phone or email so that we may assist you with your next eye checkup.

As we continue our Eye Info series, we must discuss the importance of the eye exam equipment that we utilize to provide high-quality services in our clinics.

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is an imaging method used to generate a picture of the back of your eye - called your retina. The noninvasive method produces an image by measuring the amount of a dim red light that reflects off of your retina and optic nerve. OCT can also measure the thickness of your retina and optic nerve. It is commonly used to diagnose and manage diseases, such as diabetes-related retinopathy and glaucoma. The images are three-dimensional and color-coded which your optometrist will evaluate, compare with older scans (if available) and go over the results with you.

With our standard of care and consideration to your eye health, we want to provide you with a thorough eye exam to diagnose any new or developing eye diseases, monitor the progression of them and/or create a treatment plan that will work best for you. If you have any concerns with your eyes, book your next eye exam today!

Similar to Cataracts and Glaucoma, we see many patients who suffer from Diabetes and are diagnosed with Diabetic Retinopathy (DR). The most prevalent kind of diabetic eye disease and the major cause of adult blindness and vison loss is diabetic retinopathy. It's an eye condition that affects blood vessels in the retina (the light-sensitive layer of tissue in the back of your eye). Diabetic Retinopathy affects many adults, thus, it is crucial that if you have diabetes, to get a comprehensive dilated eye exam at least once a year.

Remember, regular eye check-ups are vital for maintaining good eye health. If you experience any symptoms, consult an eye specialist. Book an appointment with any of our Optometrists at www.milleroptometry.ca!

In this installment of our Eye Info series, we continue to focus on the typical eye conditions that we regularly see in our clinics, such as glaucoma. Glaucoma sufferers experience difficulty with the internal nerves of the eye. High pressure builds up in the eye, causing damage to the optic nerve and can eventually lead to vision loss.

Let's take the time to watch one of our amazing optometrists Dr. Skinner, share her knowledge about Glaucoma, how it develops and what steps are taken to treat this condition.

Especially for Glaucoma management, regular eye examinations are critical for early detection. Book your eye exam today at www.milleroptometry.ca!

Having gained a deeper comprehension of the eye's mechanics, we can now see how the nerves and signals to the brain interact to enable us to perceive the outside world. However, there are several conditions that contribute to limiting the eye's capacity to operate normally, such as glaucoma and cataracts, many of which we come across frequently in our offices.

Cataracts are clouded lenses that produce impaired vision. Cataracts are typical with ageing but can be surgically removed. This highlights the importance of having eye exams when identifying these conditions, so book an appointment with us soon at www.milleroptometry.ca!

Interested in learning more conditions that can affect your eyes, stay tuned for what's to come next!

Heading off to Calgary for the first ever to continue our education in myopia management and control. If you have concerns about you or your children's near sightedness just meaning stronger and stronger glasses, why not schedule an appointment with one of our docs for an exam and discussion about what we can do about this.

In our earlier Eye Info series, we studied about the surface features of the eye, such as the iris and pupil. As we gaze deeper into the eye, towards the back of the eye, we may notice a few more significant mechanisms within its anatomy.

Between the lens and the back of the eye lies the mysterious vitreous cavity. It appears like a cosmic void filled with a gel-like substance called the vitreous humor. Our celestial canvas, the retina, is also located within the eye. It captures light and transforms it into neural signals. The optic nerve then carries these signals to the brain, where they are weaved together to create the images that humans refer to as visions.

And there you have it, the eye, a universe within us, where light dances, mysteries unfold, and sight paints our existence. For more cosmic insights, explore the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s detailed guide on eye anatomy. 🌟

You can visit our office and speak to any of our Optometrists about any concerns you may have with your eyes. Give us a call to book your next appointment!

Stay tuned for more important info, coming very soon!

As we begin our new Eye Information Series, it is important that we first grasp the mechanics and anatomy of the eye. When we look into the eye there are traits that many of us observe every day, but we may not always be aware of their significance.

Two of the most prominent features of the eye are the iris and pupil. The iris, like a painter’s palette, determines eye color and controls the pupil. Muscles in the iris widen or narrow the pupil, regulating light flow.

Light can enter the eye through the cornea, which is the transparent dome-shaped structure of the eye. The lens, a shape-shifting maestro, focuses light onto the retina. The cornea provides 70% of our eye's focusing capacity, while the lens contributes the other 30%. Together, they work their magic.

Remember routine eye exams are essential to maintain your eye health. Prioritize your eyes and book an eye exam at www.milleroptometry.ca!

Stay tuned for more details about the eye, coming up next!

A friendly reminder: with the upcoming solar eclipse on April 8th - looking at the Sun directly during an eclipse can lead to solar retinopathy, permanently damaging the retina's light-sensitive cells. We encourage you to practice alternative viewing methods rather than looking directly towards the sun!

While one of our staff are antique hunting, she came across these glasses - from the rust, glass lenses, small size & classic oval shape this frame is an oldie! If only we knew more about them & the person who wore them - we were able to read the power in the lenses which was +2.25.
