Shaw Woods Outdoor Education Centre
With over 200 hectares of of old growth forest, mixed forest and wetlands, Shaw Woods is open to all!
Missed posting this from a wetland program we did last week… we were encouraging the students to work to name the critters they found… kinda loving what this group did :)
It was a hot one yesterday but we stayed cool under our beautiful trees and explored the forest using all our senses!
This fantastic event is coming up tomorrow! You need to register to attend.

We would like to shout-out Brittany Mackenzie and Joe Yaraskavitch, two fabulous forestry industry partners who joined us for Forestry Management program in earlier this week. Thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge with us and our visiting students!
Digging Into the Roots of Soil… today we made soil machines (old socks filled with sand, gravel and organic material like dead leaves) to create our own Shaw Woods soil mix and went on a hike with them! Everywhere we stopped en route, we whapped the soil machines against the ground to speed along the soil-making process. When we returned to the Shanty we opened the soil machines and compared our soil samples!
We loved working with your staff and students, Eganville and District Public School! Hope to see you all out in the woods again soon!
Interested in becoming a ? Help EcoSpark track caterpillars this summer!
The citizen science project needs your help tracking an important food source for migrating birds: caterpillars and other arthropods. Check out our website to learn how to participate!
We would like to thank Dean Johnson, private forestry consultant and member of the Shaw Woods Board of Directors, for coming out and spending the day with us! He helped to deliver part of our Forestry Management program to today’s Grade 9 class. We so appreciate having our industry partners share their expertise with both our staff and our visiting students.
Yesterday we challenged our visiting 4’s and 5’s to try out their navigation skills… after learning how to use a compass to take bearings, they hid treasure boxes and wrote directions on how to find them again. Teams then had to swap directions with another group and follow their instructions to find a prize!
Thanks for the shout-out, Bonnechere Valley Inspired! We are open to the public every day and invite everyone to come enjoy our beautiful forest.
Look at this beautiful lady we encountered on the trail this morning with our students! The kids had lots of questions about what this turtle was doing walking down the Old Growth Trail so far from water! At this time of the year, female turtles leave the water in search of a good spot to lay their eggs.
This encounter serves as a good reminder to all our site visitors - leave the wildlife wild! This turtle knew where she was going and didn’t need our help. We waved goodbye to her as we continued down the trail, and we wish her safe journey as she finds a spot to lay her eggs before returning to her wetland home.
What a wonderful way to spend beautiful Saturday! Thanks to Ottawa Valley Community Arts for providing such a great program!
Lots of exploration and inquiry going on in our rainy woods these last two days!
It was such a fun day! Thanks so much for coming!

Now more than ever, it is really important to keep your dog on leash if you're enjoying a walk with your four-footed friend at Shaw Woods. There are lots of young animals in our forest right now and we want to ensure they can enjoy their home undisturbed. Thank you for your consideration!

So this was a first… while out on a hike with our students today someone spotted something odd waaaay up in a tree… anyone have a suggestion as to how a deer leg ended up in this hole about 30ft off the ground??
We hosted the international students from Opeongo High School for a special maple syrup program yesterday! We sampled maple taffy, maple sugar candies, birch syrup, and bannock, explored the forest and learned about the sugaring off process. It was wonderful to share this classic Canadian experience with these students!
