“It is so inspiring to dance with artists of different ages, and to experience such a high level of trust and mutual respect.”
Barbara is a free style dancer who has been dancing on the sacred, unceded and ancestral territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil Waututh people, for most of her life. She took her first contemporary dance class at the age of 32 at SFU Centre for the Arts and continued taking dance and theatre classes until graduation. Wanting to share her love of dance, she began teaching creative dance to young children. This evolved to her career as an Expressive Arts Educator, providing dance, storymaking, singing and visual arts workshops and facilitating drum circles. Barbara has danced and played with children and adults, educators and caregivers, people with mixed abilities and seniors with dementia. She has worked in community centres, colleges, conferences, retreat centres, senior centres and care homes, throughout BC. Since retiring in 2012, Barbara has been dancing with The Roundhouse Ageless Dancers, and is one of the founding members of The Monday Dancers in partnership with the Roundhouse. While Barbara has been a familiar dancing presence at music festivals and outdoor events for decades, this will be her first professional performance.
"Audiences will witness the power, the beauty and the tenderness that can occur when dancers are committed to the work, no matter what their age or 'professional' status."

A 50 year range of ages joins us in an exploration of strength and vulnerability through different phases of our lives. This intergenerational project is a special one for Inverso, bringing together professional and community dancers from 26-76 years old. How do our relationships across generations allow us to give in, grow and rebuild? How do the constellations of our families shift as the weight of care teeters over time?
Performers: Daria Mikhaylyuk, Marisa Gold, Justin Calvadores, Kerstin Luettich and Barbara Karmazyn.

Gem-like+ Film screening of Spooky Action
The Shadbolt is not as far away as it seems.
This work is a departure for me, a very personal work inspired by my experience with my mother.
I feel so lucky to work with my amazing Gem-like collaborators: Stéphanie Cyr and Kiera Hill .kiki who generously dive into the world we created. Huge thanks to Barbara Adler , who gave me confidence, encouragement and advice along the way, preemptively knowing what to say! Thanks to Daniel O'Shea who helped with lighting and to the great tech team at the Shadbolt. Shout out to Cory Philley who offered Inverso a residency at Shadbolt Centre for the Arts over the past 2 years and has always been an huge supporter for artists in our community.
The Spooky Action Film, with text by Barbara Adler and composition by James Meger, is also special to share on a big screen. Big thanks to , Steph, Eden Solomon and Andrew Mackenzie and for making this film happen!

PREMIERE DAY!
MAY 25-28 Gem-like and Spooky Action Film
I’m excited about our upcoming show and look forward to sharing the beautiful world Steph and Kiera have brought to life the next 4 nights at the Shadbolt.
Gem-like is a premiere inspired by both the frustrations and the small "gem-like" moments experienced in long-term care with my mother. I am left with an admiration for the search for beauty and small bits of joy through all this, especially by those in the toughest positions. The work explores: What does disappearance feel like? How do we find ways to perform the systems we live in and more importantly perform for the sheer will to connect?
Thanks to my amazing Gem-like collaborators: Stéphanie Cyr, Kiera Hill .kiki , and Barbara Adler
We will also be screening a short film version of Spooky Action (also a premiere!) Director of photography David Cooper featuring Stéphanie Cyr and Eden Solomon with text by Barbara Adler, composition by James Meger and edited by Andrew Mackenzie.

May 25-28: Gem-like is a premiere inspired by both the frustrations and the small "gem-like" moments experienced in long-term care with my mother. We have grappled with Public Health regulations and have edited and erased the text to reframe the sense of restriction we felt. It has been a long 2 years of lockdowns, isolation, hard fought limitations and slow decline. I am left with an admiration for the search for beauty and small bits of joy through all this, especially by those in the toughest positions. The work explores: What does disappearance feel like? How do we find ways to perform the systems we live in and more importantly perform for the sheer will to connect?

As we start 2022, I wanted to wish all of you a brave and reenergized start to the year as we find new ways to create and share.
2021 was full of reinvention, challenges, starts and restarts and renewed excitement for returning to the stage. As I looked back over our activities this past year, I realized the incredible amount of work we managed to accomplish in difficult circumstances.
I'd like to sincerely thank .council and our donors, board, members, team and collaborators who put in incredible efforts to make things happen this year. Special thanks to Heather Myers who kept us going through thick and thin!
