If you are or any family members have an interest in becoming a lawyer, this free one hour ceremony may be interesting to attend. CEBA LOANS - REPAYMENT DEADLINE - JANUARY 18, 2024

The forgiveness repayment date has been extended to January 18, 2024, for eligible CEBA Borrowers in good standing. If the loan remains outstanding on January 19, 2024, it will convert to a non-amortizing term loan with full principal repayment due on December 31, 2026. Borrowers with outstanding balances as of January 18, 2024, will be contacted by their financial institution to request a lump sum repayment of the outstanding debt. If, at that point, they do not fully repay their CEBA loan to their financial institution, the financial institution will likely be required to assign their loan to the government’s CEBA Program for collection efforts.

CHANGES TO RESP RULES FOR DIVORCED AND SEPARATED COUPLES in the 2023 FEDERAL Budget.
Effective March 28, 2023, divorced or separated parents can now open joint RESPs for one or more of their children and move an existing joint RESP to a different RESP provider.

Before this change, only spouses or common-law partners could jointly open a RESP for their children (and separated/divorced parents could not). Also, before the 2023 Budget, parents who opened a joint RESP account during their relationship could maintain the account after separation but could not open new joint RESPs with a different provider or move an existing joint RESP account to another provider.
These changes may assist divorced/separated couples better plan for their children's higher education.

SUPREME COURT OF CANADA.
BREAKING NEWS affecting Individuals' CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS regarding ICBC. Individuals' right to sue in the courts limited on December 22, 2022.
On May 12, 2022, the British Columbia Court of Appeal (“BCCA”) held that the legislation granting the Civil Resolution Tribunal (“CRT”) the exclusive jurisdiction to determine whether an injury is a “minor injury” and the specialized expertise to determine liability and damages for personal injury of up to $50,000, was constitutional: Trial Lawyers Association of British Columbia v. British Columbia (Attorney General) 2022 BCCA 163. Shortly thereafter, the Trial Lawyers Association of British Columbia (“TLABC”) applied for leave to appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada (“SCC”), and unsuccessfully sought a stay of the BCCA decision pending leave to appeal to the SCC.

Today, the Supreme Court of Canada dismissed the TLABC’s leave application.

British Columbia Supreme Court in person trials postponed again….until at least January 24 , 2022

Given the rapid recent increase in Covid-19 cases in British Columbia, Chief Justice Christopher Hickson has ordered that all in-person civil and family trials and other in-person proceeding scheduled to begin on Monday January 10th or during the weeks of January 10 to 14 and January 17 to 21st are adjourned. ( i.e. cancelled for now / postponed).
If you thought you were going to court next week and do not know what you should be doing, call your lawyer or the courthouse.
The Chief Judge has stated the time frame of cancelling in-person hearings MAY be extended but we will not know about any possible extension until later next week.

What's happening in the British Columbia Supreme Court this month?
Madame Justice Brenda Brown dismissed a mother's court application to prevent her child, age 17, from having a gender surgery. The mother was also ordered to pay her ex husband's and her child's legal fees.
