Don't miss next week's webinar organized by the Disaster Medicine SIG. "Unsafe Ground: Epidemiological Insights into the Health Impacts of Landmines and other Explosive Ordnance" - will be presented by Stacey Pizzino from the UQ School of Public Health. This event will take place at 21:00 PST (13 Nov.) / 14:00 JST, 15:00 AEST (14 Nov.) on Zoom.
Presentation Summary:
Explosive (EO), including , are the enduring legacy of war and threaten the health of affected communities across generations. For civilians within these communities, visible consequences are obvious and severe. However, there is a paucity of research evaluating the health impacts of these weapons; consequently, affected communities are often absent in global metrics.
This research addresses this knowledge gap by providing the world’s largest study of landmine and EO casualties evaluating mortality and non-fatal injury. Using the Hardly Reached Data (HARD) framework, developed as part of this research, data was collected from over 100,00 casualties across 17 countries. These data were pooled and analyzed to provide estimates of case fatality, mortality predictors, trauma distribution, and injury patterns.

It is an unfortunate reality that active attacker events at workplaces are becoming more common, and health care workplaces are no different. Staff have been threatened, people have been harmed and others have been killed because of an individual or individuals actively engaging in attempting to harm or kill with a weapon.
These stories are well-documented, deeply upsetting and have led to changes to the ways in which health care settings prepare for and mitigate against these attacks.

We are excited to offer this unique disaster medicine experience. This combines mind-opening discussions and excursions on disaster preparedness and response, with unparalleled cultural experiences. Because of the experiential nature of this trip (this is not sit-in-a-lecture-hall kind of CME) we are limited in how many people we can accommodate and we need at least 30 participants for it to be feasible. We are still a few short. We'd love to see you in Israel in January.

Would you rather... ...a grey rhino or a black swan? An unprecedented choice. I think the only thing about the word unprecedented that is true, is its use in everyday language.
