History in the making! Today, the Odysseus lunar lander, created by Intuitive Machines and NASA, just landed to make the first private landing on the Moon in 50 years. Launched on February 15th aboard SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket, Odysseus touched down on the lunar surface at 6:24 PM ET.

This mission marks a significant milestone in U.S. lunar exploration, as it is the first successful U.S. Moon landing since the Apollo 17 mission in 1972. This is an unmanned mission however. Although back in the 70's there were six successful US manned missions to the moon.

Apollo 11 (July 1969)
Apollo 12 (November 1969)
Apollo 14 (January 1971)
Apollo 15 (July 1971)
Apollo 16 (April 1972)
Apollo 17 (December 1972)

This mission is unmanned for the following reasons.

1. ) Cost: Manned missions are significantly more expensive and complex than unmanned missions. Sending humans to the Moon requires life support systems, more robust spacecraft, and a significant amount of resources. By contrast, unmanned missions are more cost-effective and allow for more frequent and diverse exploration.

2.) Safety: Manned missions pose higher risks to human life. By sending robots and probes, we can gather data and conduct experiments without putting human lives in danger.

3.) Technological advancements: Robotics, AI, and remote sensing technologies have advanced significantly since the Apollo missions, making it possible to perform complex tasks on the Moon without the need for a human presence.

However, later this year, there are plans for manned missions to the Moon in NASA's Artemis program.
