“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.” Psalm 107:1 NIV
We often say the phrase “God is good … all the time. All the time … God is good.” We usually use this phrase when we are celebrating a blessing that God has brought our way. We don’t say it as often when we are facing some challenging times. But if we really believe what we are saying, if God is good all the time, He is good in the challenging times as well as the pleasant times.
King David understood this when he wrote today’s verse. Forever is a very long time, and while here on earth, our lives are marked by hills and valleys – times of great joy and times of sorrow and grief.
Whatever we are facing, we need to be reminded that God is good – and He is with us through all of life. We ought to hear from the mouths of God’s people, God is good … all the time, even in the midst of the most difficult things that life throws our way.

“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” Colossians 3:17 NIV
As we read through the Gospels, we often see Jesus confronting the religious legalists. He accused them of forcing the people to live according to laws that they themselves failed to keep. The laws always felt restricting, but they left nothing to the imagination – you knew exactly how to live.
Jesus did away with these religious regulations. As followers of His, we are called to live a life that looks like His – truth with compassion and grace. It's not as easy to live this way. We need to keep in close connection with God’s Word and the indwelling Holy Spirit. In today’s verse, Paul gives some wise advice as we live by the Spirit.
As we live our lives, desiring to be like Jesus, we must always ask ourselves if what we are doing can be done in the name of Jesus. It will help us live a Jesus-like life.

“But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet.” 1 Thessalonians 5:8 NIV
When we think about the will of God, we often think about what His plan is for our lives. God does have a plan for our lives, and we find great peace in finding ourselves there. This is God’s specific will for our lives, but He also has a general will for all of His people, and He makes it very clear in His Word.
All Christians are supposed to look a certain way. Not physically, of course. I’ve had the privilege of travelling and meeting Christians in many countries around the world, in a wide variety of cultures. Outwardly, Christians look very different in a South Sudanese refugee camp in Uganda than they do on the streets of Sao Paulo Brazil. But inwardly, spiritually, they all look similar.
The mark of the follower of Jesus is that we are clothed in sobriety, filled with faith and love, living a life marked with hope.

“The end of a matter is better than its beginning, and patience is better than pride. Do not be quickly provoked in your spirit, for anger resides in the lap of fools.” Ecclesiastes 7:8-9 NIV
It seems that some people just love to push our buttons. This comes natural to us as human beings – I’ve seen it in my little grandsons as they play with their siblings and friends – they know just what to say to get the other person upset – and they can do it often when they are playing.
As we get older, we can too easily continue to do this, and it has led to broken friendships, failed marriages and divided families. Wise King Solomon understood all of this as he looked at the world through the eyes of wisdom.
Others are going to poke us with their words and actions. How we respond makes all the difference to our relationships and our witness for Jesus. How much better to be patient and refuse to be provoked.

The conversation from Acts 8 inspires the Adult Ministry programs you are supporting. Local champions are coming alongside men and women to help them learn how to read and understand what God's Word has to say for their lives.
“The great thing to remember is that though our feelings come and go, God’s love for us does not.” - C.S. Lewis
“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” Colossians 3:12 NIV
Some people spend an inordinate amount of time considering what they should wear. With the introduction of things like shopping channels and more recently online websites it is easy to click and order. I wonder how much time we put into considering, and obtaining, the spiritual clothing that the Bible says we ought to be wearing.
Christians are called to wear very specific spiritual clothing. When people look at us, this is what they should see – these are far more important than what we look like physically. Only the Holy Spirit can produce this clothing – compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.
Sadly, we so often wear the spiritual clothing of the world – bitterness, anger, violence, lust. These don’t make us look any different than someone who doesn’t know Jesus. We need to invite the Holy Spirit to clothe us in the spiritual garments that marked the life of Jesus – we need to look like Him in every way.

“A hot-tempered person stirs up conflict, but the one who is patient calms a quarrel.” Proverbs 15:18 NIV
The world is marked by contention. Spend a few minutes on a news channel or a news website and you will easily find numerous examples of rioting, looting, political intrigue and vitriol, on just about every continent in the world – things seem pretty quiet in Antarctica right now.
So, what does the Bible say about all of this? It actually says many things – in the Beatitudes, Jesus said the peacemakers are blessed because they will be called the children of God. Long before Jesus stepped on the earth, King Solomon wrote about the wisdom of quieting contention in today’s verse.
Emotions often run high in our world – and followers of Jesus can too easily get caught up in those emotions. Solomon in his wisdom knew that it was far better to be patient as we watch the world swirl around us. We are called to do all we can to bring about peace and reconciliation.

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.” 1 Corinthians 13:4 NIV
Back in the 90s, the Jamaican musical artist Haddaway asked, in an iconic song that has over 330 million views on YouTube last time I checked, asks the question of the ages – what is love? That has been the question of the ages for all of us – we all need to experience love in our lives. That was built into us by our Creator – who loves us and who gives us the capacity to love Him and others.
The challenge is that in our sinful world, love is too often confused with the lusts of the flesh and comes with strings attached. What a contrast to agape love. Paul explains that in the great love chapter in his first epistle to the Christians in Corinth.
Today’s verse is the ultimate explanation of God’s love for us and what ought to be our love for Him and others. We can only love this way when we have experienced His love expressed to us like this in Jesus.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” Philippians 4:6 NIV
There is so much that can lead us into anxiety. Some people live with that anxiety to the extent that it is called chronic. Our Creator, who lived on this earth for some three decades in the person of Jesus the Christ, understands what anxiety is all about. We saw His full humanity in the Garden of Gethsemane as He sweat drops of blood.
In everything, Jesus taught us what to do when anxiety strikes us – He went directly to the Father in prayer and yielded it all to the will of God. Paul gives us the same advice in today’s verse.
As we take everything to the Lord in prayer, we find that He lifts the load. He is so much more able to carry it all than we are. And Paul adds the call to thanksgiving in the midst of whatever is causing the anxiety. So, pray and give thanks.

“Be still and wait patiently for the Lord to act. Don’t be upset when other people succeed. Don’t be upset when they carry out their evil plans. Turn away from anger and don’t give in to wrath. Don’t be upset, because that only leads to evil. Sinful people will be destroyed. But those who put their hope in the Lord will receive the land.” Psalm 37:7-9 NIRV
Don’t you just hate it when someone gets ahead in this world, and you don’t. Doesn’t it seem unfair when someone less deserving than you ends up with something nice and you don’t. It is particularly difficult when they are not nice people, or are using others to get ahead.
Our sense of justice cries out! And while we are called to speak up for others who are being mistreated, when it comes to ourselves, we are called to heed the words found in today’s verse.
When we see others getting ahead while we humbly serve God, we need to keep eternity in view – we have an incredible reward waiting.
