Thank you to the group of amazing Women at Bell group who donated school supplies for YSB’s Youth Drop-In classroom.

YSB works in partnership with young people as individuals, to understand what they need to ensure they feel seen, heard, and supported. As part of our shelters and housing program, YSB operates a downtown Youth Drop-In, open 365 days a year. Along with providing street-involved youth with staff support and guidance, the Youth Drop-In offers healthy meals, shower and laundry facilities, laundry, access to clothing, support and counselling. We also have an onsite classroom for youth to gain high school credits they may be missing in order to graduate.

The kindness and generosity of a donation of backpacks and school supplies for YSB's Youth Drop-In classroom students ensures that these youth are well-prepared with the tools they need to succeed and feel confident as they work towards their high school education.

Thank you , and the Women at Bell, for being such an incredible part of our community. Together, we are making a difference! ❤️🙌

We were honoured recently to welcome Michael Maidment, President and CEO, & Tais McNeill, Manager, Grants from the Ottawa Community Foundation for a tour of our young women’s shelter.

It was an incredibly meaningful visit and conversation, and an opportunity for us to express our heartfelt gratitude for their and their donors’ investments in – among many areas of our work – our shelters and housing buildings for previously homeless youth.

Ultimately, the young people we serve benefit from this generosity and the impact is both life-changing and lasting. Together, we believe that everything changes when you house homeless youth. It’s THE opportunity to stop the cycle of homelessness into adulthood.

Thank you OCF and donors! 🫶

Meet Paige Nicks, our amazing Community Care Coordinator at YSB. Paige’s journey with YSB and her passion for supporting at-risk youth are truly inspiring.

Learn more about her work and aspirations in our Q&A below. ⬇️

❓ How did you get involved with YSB and working with at-risk youth?

🗣️ “I began my journey at the Young Men’s Shelter and Transitional Housing and have recently transitioned to the Youth Community Developer role. I often joke about social services being the ‘family business’ because a large part of my family works with vulnerable populations in different capacities. My dad managed an outdoor therapeutic centre for at-risk youth and raised six kids with my mom before they started their journey as foster parents. My sister is a parole officer, my brother manages a community living association for adults living with disabilities, and my other sister is a protection worker. I looked up to these inspiring people my whole life, so it kind of makes sense that I found myself in the same field.”

❓ Is there a specific story about a young person that stands out and you would like to share?

🗣️ “One story that has brightened my day is about a youth who transitioned from the Young Men’s Shelter and Transitional Housing to the McEwen Long-Term Housing building recently. When I first met this young person, he rarely came out of his room and had challenges with daily activities like personal hygiene and cleanliness. He also expressed a lot of anxiety in social settings. Fast forward 10 months, and he is living independently and is an active and passionate participant in all things related to community development at McEwen. He has even expressed interest in peer supporting opportunities. It is such an honour to be an ally during a huge period of growth in this young person’s life.”

On this day in 1834, the Slavery Abolition Act came into effect, ending slavery in the British Empire, including Canada. Emancipation Day celebrates the strength, resilience, and contributions of Black communities in shaping our diverse society.

At YSB, we honour this legacy by reflecting, learning, and engaging in the ongoing fight against both anti-Black and anti-Indigenous racism and discrimination. We continue to support all youth and families through our inclusive services. Together, we want to contribute to creating a community where everyone can have the same chances and thrive.

Here’s Johnny! 🌟

Introducing Johnny McKnight, a dedicated Youth and Family Counsellor with the YSB Mental Health Services. Johnny’s commitment to supporting youth and families through their mental health challenges is truly inspiring.
Learn more about his work in our Q&A below. ⬇️

❓ How can a young person reach you?
🗣️ “Any time of day, at any time during the week, a person can call our 24/7 Crisis Line or access our online 24/7 Crisis Chat service. If a situation requires support beyond that contact, our Mobile Crisis Team can go to the family’s home and work together with the family. If needed, the Mobile Crisis Team can then recommend an appointment where the family can access any of the other services we offer.”

❓ What is a common theme facing youth when it comes to mental health challenges?
🗣️ “Young people coming through our Walk-In Clinic might be struggling with school, managing peer relationships, and anxiety. Other times it might be youth trying to deal with relationships breaking down between family members, and they are having trouble seeing eye to eye.”

❓ What is special about the work that you get to do?
🗣️ “People allow us into their lives at moments when they are feeling their most vulnerable, and they trust us to support them and work with them. It’s very special to be helping them at that critical point in their lives.”

❓ How can community members help break the stigma attributed to mental health?
🗣️ “When a young person identifies for the first time that they’re having a difficult time with their mental health, we should ensure they feel heard, understood, and guided. It’s really about encouraging people to be open to getting help if they feel they need it.”

If you or someone you know is struggling, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re here to help. 💙
