UPDATE: Toby has been adopted! Thanks to all who helped him find a new home.
This is a courtesy posting: Lhasa available for adoption in Indiana or within a three-hour travel window ...
~ Toby is an eight-year old male Lhasa Apso. He is neutered, up to date on vaccinations and weighs about 15 lbs. He does not have any current or pre-existing medical conditions.
~ Toby was raised alongside a female Lhasa Apso all his life, but is now looking for a home without other dogs as he has shown a tendency to resource guard. However, he is being fostered in a home with cats and is doing fine with them.
~ Toby needs a home with no children. Sudden movements scare him so the noise and general movements of children would stress him out too much.
~ Toby has some triggers that have resulted in biting. As long as those triggers are avoided, he is overall a calm and sweet dog. Toby's main trigger is his resource guarding, he can be food possessive and is definitely possessive of treats. Toby is looking for a home that will take his resource guarding seriously and make sure they are setting him up for success by providing the right environment. It is important to avoid taking things from his mouth, especially snacks. His resource guarding can be managed by not giving him treats that take a while to eat (ie., greenies, bully sticks etc.), leaving him alone while he is eating, or redirecting his attention to a higher-value treat. Toby does not like his front paws to be touched, we recommend that he be taken to a professional groomer for haircuts and to get his nails clipped.
~ Toby does not like to be woken suddenly which can be easily managed by talking to him to wake him slowly. In a calm, stable environment Toby absolutely thrives and you would have no idea that he has issues.
~ Toby LOVES to be around people and all he wants in life is to be loved on. His calling in life is to be a lap dog so he would love a home where he can be part of the family and sit with you on the couch or sleep in the bed with you. Since Toby loves being around people his ideal home would be someone that is home more often than not, ideally someone retired. He also enjoys going on walks, he perks up when you get his leash out and really seems to enjoy being outside.
Toby needs an experienced Lhasa person/home that will commit to working through his issues through training (group and/or private lessons) and benevolent leadership. He sounds like the typical Lhasa that's been allowed to get away with certain behaviors and -- because it works for him -- he's repeating it.

It's said that everyone is a little bit Irish on St Paddy's Day ... unless you're a Lhasa. Then you're still a Lhasa.
Anyone have big plans for the day?
Don't forget to set your clocks ahead an hour tonight! Again. We're tired already ...
UPDATE: Kuper has a new home!
A well-bred, six-year old neutered male that was returned to his breeder is looking for a new home … meet Kuper!
Here is what his former owner advises: He is partial to my husband. Always wants to be with him. He still works 3 days a week. So it can be pretty quiet around here other days. Kuper obeys me better. He’s very friendly to our adult daughter when she’s over. Our two sons families moved away (2 and 4 yrs ago) but he had nipped their kids a few times, so I would suggest a new family without children. The kennel says he protects his food. The kennel lets him play with other dogs and when on walks he greets other neighborhood dogs without problems.
We have not used the crate for around six months. He sleeps in his doggy bed in our bedroom. He does not jump up on furniture and he does not chew on things. His favorite toy by far is a 6-inch rabbit that I bought on Amazon. He does not squeak or tear them apart. He loves to play fetch with it. He has the run of the first floor of our condo, including when we are gone for the day. Occasionally we are gone for 8-9 hours and he has been fine with no barking or accidents
When he has to go out he will either sit by the door or come over and jump up or sit and stare at you. He goes out on a tie- out as we do not have a fenced in yard. He loves being outside. He loves walks and does not bark at people or dogs walking. He will go right up to other dogs, but not the people. He tends to be leery of strangers. His groomer says he is good; however, she has to muzzle him when she does his feet and nails.
During Covid we began having deliveries by Amazon, grocery stores etc. to our doorstep. That may have been the point that his behavior changed to being more aggressive (barking, protecting). He would have had less socialization then as well.
His breeder has this to say after he was returned: He has behaved well here. He is crated and seems comfortable in the crate. He was upset the first time I tried to pick him up. I just spoke calmly to him, explained what I was doing and going to do, and he was okay. It was the same with my husband. He has to learn to trust and after less than a day of him being here, he was doing fine. He is definitely overweight!! A new owner will need to take steps to get him to lose 2-3 lbs.
Contact Joyce Johanson at 309-837-1665 or via email at: [email protected]. Kuper is located in Illinois.
** For reference, the hallmark of conservation breeder is they will take back any dog of their breeding at any time in the dog’s life should it become necessary. This safety net is in place to ensure their dogs do not end up in a shelter situation or worse.

It is with great sadness that we advise the Lhasa Apso Rescue community Helen Zeppenfeld, ALAC’s National Rescue Chair, passed away on Wednesday, December 6, 2023, after a lengthy battle with cancer. Her two dogs, Kelly and Meeka, are with a long-time family friend where they will live out their lives.
Helen will be long remembered as a tireless worker for any Apso in need. The ALAC community is grateful for her many years of service taking care of the breed we hold so dearly. We mourn her passing but take comfort in knowing that she was met by a herd of hairy little dogs as she stepped upon the path to her next journey. Namaste, my friend.
For our ALAC coordinators: Vickie Kuhlmann will be stepping in as ALAC's National Rescue Chair. Please contact her with any concerns you may have and to advise if you are willing/able to continue as a foster home or resource in your area.
Getting in the holiday mood ... well, some of us are (hubby, not so much 😜).
Just a reminder for Thursday ... and that pancreatitis can be very, very expensive to treat!
If one is looking to add a well-bred Lhasa puppy to their family from a heritage breeder, please contact me off list for a referral at: [email protected]
These are puppies from a champion sire and dam — not just “champion bloodlines” which can mean ONE champion five generations or more back. Located in South Carolina, there are two 13-week old females available. Please note that well-bred puppies with a health guarantee can run $2000 to $3500, depending on the area of the country, titles on the parents, etc., etc.
If you are looking for a puppy in any area of the country, we can help with referrals, information, etc.
As rescue for the AKC parent breed club — the American Lhasa Apso Club — we support rescue *and* heritage breeders who breed with an eye towards the breed standard, health and temperament. Heritage breeders will always take back a dog they have produced so it does not end up in a shelter or rescue situation. They also do health testing, are involved with the parent club and/or local specialty clubs and prove their dogs in a variety of venues.

Stay tuned, folks ... we have three other young males that will be looking for new homes shortly. Details and link to application to follow. Two are located in Minnesota and the other in Colorado.

These are purebred Lhasa Apsos from a responsible breeder ... Zuko is a retired AKC champion; Ollie is from champion sire and dam. Not a bonded pair so can be separated.
Zuko and Ollie are looking for new homes. Their current owner has a lot going on and unable to care for them long term. Please reach out to their breeder at 651-434-7459 (call or text) and if everything is a good fit, their owner’s contact information will be forwarded.
