VPD Cadets
In the VPD Cadet Program, you’ll have fun working hard, participating in team activities and making new and lasting friendships.
Always a privilege to participate in the annual Paul Sanghera Memorial game to honor Cst Sanghera who was killed in the line of duty on January 8,1982. The friendly match between the VPD Cadets and the VPD men’s and women’s soccer team was a good time for all involved.
Big props to the 27 cadets who showed up today for the annual Larry Young 5K Memorial Run to honour his legacy and ensure he is never forgotten.
“After 2 years in this program, I can confidently say it has been life changing. From doing push-ups to talks about mental health, this program has nurtured a sense of community and growth I would have never imagined. Through the experiences here, I’ve gained friendships, discipline and challenged myself. These skills have allowed me to grow as a person both inside and outside of cadets. Allowing me self-confidence I need as I grow into a young adult. Through the ups and downs, we cadets have learned how to rely and uplift each other; truly acting as a family. The VPD Cadet program is like no other, and I will forever be grateful I’ve been given the opportunity to be part of this family.“

“I would say that being a part of the VPD Cadet Program has been a valuable decision as it has been a transformative experience, having made a significant positive impact on my life. While learning about law enforcement alongside great role models, the program has taught me about leadership and personal development. It has provided great opportunities such as community events, ceremonies and has been a foundation to many meaningful connections.
It has instilled the mindset of pushing past your perceived limits and striving for excellence, whether that be pushing yourself during PT sessions or practicing public speaking. The VPD Cadet Program has truly been a formative and unforgettable experience that has prepared me for future challenges, while instilling the values of ICARE and the drive to take every opportunity to improve.

“Although being a part of the VPD Cadets was only a short chapter of my life, I know that I’ll remember my time, experience, and the friends I made on this journey forever.
The VPD Cadet Program has taught me many valuable lessons that have been very impactful in my life. Not only did I learn important life lessons, but I was also challenged to become a better version of myself in every way. Whether it was physically, mentally, or emotionally, this experience has taught me to go above and beyond to not only reach but to exceed my goals.
I will forever be grateful for the opportunities I was provided to build meaningful connections with VPD officers and, most importantly, the community. I have never felt so involved with the people around me than I have while being in this program. In the past two years of being a cadet, I have been able to give back to the community during various public events and parades, and what better way to do it alongside other cadets whom I now consider to be some of my best friends.
The physical training, community events, and learning experiences have taught me to face challenges, making me stronger both physically and mentally. I find myself being less doubtful and more confident in my abilities.
But the most important part of all is the teamwork. We support and encourage each other to meet our goals and demonstrate collective accountability when one makes a mistake. No matter what, we are all in this together. The VPD Cadets were, and always will be, my second family.”

“My favourite part of Cadets is that no one ever sits alone— and that in itself has been life changing. VPD Cadets has this incredible power to connect people, whether strangers from across the city or people you pass in the halls daily. Through the best/worst pains from the POPAT fitness test, the symphonies of drill, or even the bus rides in between, Cadets creates this unbreakable community of youth through fun and challenging activities every week. The program has solidified its place as a second family for me and has shown that there is joy and connection in literally everything imaginable.
I am incredibly honoured to have been a part of this program. VPD Cadets is amazing, especially for youth who are trying to navigate all the uncertainties that come with teenage-hood.
So, if you:
- Always wonder what to do on Saturdays
- Want to make meaningful connections
- Want to change your life
I wholeheartedly recommend to apply for Class #11!”

“Even after only a year in the VPD Cadet program, I can confidently say that joining was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Cadets has helped me go from a shy and hesitant teenager, to a confident young woman with newfound purpose. My favourite part of cadets is the sense of family and community that the instructors foster in us. As cadets, we are taught that we are one big family, full of brothers and sisters. Throughout the many tough workouts, intense drill practices, and interesting presentations, I constantly feel that sense of supportive community. Having a safe, encouraging, and supportive place to spend my Saturdays has helped me to grow as a person. I am able to use what I learn at cadets such as discipline, teamwork, and integrity in my daily life. VPD Cadets is a program I would recommend to anyone who wants to better themselves and others and create long lasting friendships and memories.“

With only one week to go, it was time to let loose and have some fun. Volleyball-soccer-dodgeball-tug of war-maximum fun. Also, the time for a new cadet instructor to take over has come again. Although difficult, change is good, and fresh ideas and methods are what will keep the program going for many years to come. Want to be a part of what’s next? Get your application in for Class 11.

“Throughout my years of highschool, I have never had the thought of regret after being part of the VPD Cadet program for three years. From the start, the VPD Cadet program has not only allowed my transformation in character, but to learn valuable knowledge in leadership and connection to the community surrounded by it through volunteer clean ups and the opportunities in participating in parades.
Immersing myself led to everlasting memories and friendships. I always looked forward to the interactive and entertaining presentations of the special units within VPD and all the guest speakers we’ve had who inspire us all. Each weekend spent at camps with a variety of guest constables created stronger connections towards them and fellow cadets. I can’t truly express my gratitude to the constables who run this program who helped with my character growth.
Being a VPD Cadet truly gives you an unforgettable, life changing experience that you could never reject. Being a third year cadet has left me with memories and experiences I will hold on for years to come. I am thankful for one of the best opportunities I experienced through this program and having a second family not knowing how close we all became.”

“After joining cadets much to my parents chagrin I realized that there was no other program like this. No program that fostered team building and community to such an extent. Through this program I have had experiences that I never thought I would have from attempting and passing the POPAT, to getting to ride on Police boats, to doing a polar plunge in March and I’ve made friendships that will last a lifetime. Looking back now that I’m finishing my third and final year, it’s bittersweet knowing that my time as a cadet is over but I’m happy that there will be more cadets rising to the challenge every single Saturday.“

“After joining the VPD cadets on a whim, I can now easily say it was the best decision I had made in a while. Initially I was dreading waking up at the crack of dawn every Saturday, but after that first day I immediately felt at home. The camaraderie, and familial feeling means a-lot to not just me but my peers as well, and I have never once felt unwelcome or as if I was in the way. Every Saturday we are met by something different, whether it be a surprise POPAT day, presentations followed by activities, or ceremonies where we get to feel as though we are a part of something bigger. Through this program, we are given the opportunity to learn drill, Judo, and other activities. It is because of these that I have been able to see myself grow, and become someone who is responsible, independent, and confident, in my first and unfortunately final year of cadets.”

“The VPD Cadet program is truly amazing, offering a plethora of experiences and opportunities for teenagers to unlock their full potential. Participating in this program has been a transformative experience for me personally. Over the course of three years, I have not only gained valuable knowledge from engaging and informative presentations but have also forged lasting friendships within the diverse community fostered by the VPD Cadet program. By immersing myself in the program's dynamic presentations, exciting yet rigorous physical activities and drill sessions, I have been able to explore new interests, develop essential skills, and cultivate a newfound sense of self-assurance. This program has played a pivotal role in shaping me from a timid 10th grader to a confident 12th grader prepared to tackle any challenge that comes my way. Each component of the program, from hands-on challenges to leadership development, is thoughtfully crafted to inspire, motivate, and empower young individuals to strive for success. I am so thankful that I was given the opportunity to take part in this program. Alongside the amazing food and the fun activities we get to participate in, this is a family that I never knew I would become so close with.”

Participating in the VPD Cadet Program has been an enriching and transformative journey that has left a lasting mark on my life. Over the course of my three-year tenure, I’ve been fortunate to immerse myself in a vibrant and diverse community, creating deep bonds with fellow cadets, mentors, and members of the VPD. From the rigorous PT sessions to the enriching presentations, every moment spent within this program has been invaluable, pushing me beyond my limits and helping me discover strengths I never knew I had. What truly sets this experience apart is the sense of camaraderie and belonging that permeates every aspect of the program. I’ve had the privilege of connecting with individuals from all walks of life, each bringing their own unique perspectives and experiences to the table. Through this program, I’ve not only gained invaluable skills and insights into law enforcement but have also become a part of something much larger – a tight-knit community bound together by a shared commitment to ICARE. As I reflect on my journey with the VPD Cadet Program, I am filled with gratitude for the countless memories, lessons, and relationships that have shaped me into the person I am today. It’s an experience that has not only prepared me for the challenges ahead but has also left me with a sense of purpose and belonging, reminding me that together, we are stronger, and that the bonds we forge along the way are what truly define us.
