Our second meeting of 2024 is in the books!
A big thank you to Mary Minielli, Business Development Manager (as well as a 100 Women Durham member!) and the team at Chartwell Harwood Retirement Residence for hosting us in their gorgeous space.
Members voted, and our Charity of Choice for May 2024 is:
Autism Home Base, nominated by members Rose, Susan and Susan.
Derek shared the story of his brother Robbie, who is non-verbal and on the autism spectrum, highlighting the challenges his family has faced in finding suitable support and programs for Robbie's needs. He expressed concern about his parents' retirement being consumed by caregiving and emphasized the importance of community and connection for families like his.
Derek praised Autism Home Base for providing a lifeline of support, fostering a sense of hope for families and individuals like Robbie. He urged donors to contribute, emphasizing the organization's vital role in creating a supportive environment where individuals with autism can thrive.

That's the sound of (almost!!) 100+ Women Who Care! 🥳
is more than just a group - it's a movement. We meet four times a year to do something extraordinary: nominate, vote, and donate to a charity of our choice for that quarter.
Three of these charities are selected at random to join us at the meeting and share their work. And then, the magic happens - each member votes, and a charity is chosen.
It's a simple yet incredibly powerful process. 💪🏼❤️
To date, we have raised a total of $215,124 for 37 charities serving Durham Region. Every dollar has made a difference, and every member has played a part in these impactful donations. 🙌
Help us reach 100+ members! The more women, the greater the impact. 👩🏼🤝👩🏾
💜 Are you committed to helping others in our community but short on time?
💜 Do you want 100% of your donations to go directly to local charities?
💜 Are you looking to join a powerful group of local, like-minded women who make an immediate, direct, and positive impact on the Durham Region community?

Luke's Place Support & Resource Centre for Women & Children, nominated by Kim and Sandra
Members who haven't sent in your donation, please do so TODAY. 💸
* reminder: all donations are DUE the day of the meeting.
We heard from Laura Oliver, Fund Development & Communications Manager (and a NEW member!)
Contrary to common perception, leaving an abusive partner does not signify the end of threats; instead, it escalates the danger, with the subsequent two years posing the highest risk of lethality.
Luke's Place emerges as a beacon of support for individuals, who grapple with relentless challenges post-separation, including financial hurdles and constant surveillance. The organization provides essential services, conducts critical research, and advocates for systemic change within the legal framework.
Sadly the demand for Luke's Place services has surged by over 50% in a year, painting a troubling picture of the pervasive issue within the community. This surge signals an urgent need for collective action.

Members voted, and our Charity of Choice for November is:
Marigold Hospice Care - formerly Durham Hospice Clarington nominated by Helen & Kellie and Patricia.
We heard from Jill Richardson - a long-time Board Member.
Jill shared her why? She has worked on the hospice project for the last ten years after her husband Terry was facing the end of his life with a cancer diagnosis. Their only option was an acute care hospital bed, which was noisy, lacked privacy, limited visiting hours, and they could not be together during the night. Jill was grieving and angry; they had lost precious time together, and Terry had been treated in an undignified way.
Had comprehensive Hospice care been available, Terry would have passed in a peaceful environment, symptoms managed more effectively, and they would have had more quality time together.
Jill's story is one that many families share throughout the region; the need for more hospice beds in Durham is great.
They are moving closer to making Marigold Hospice a reality.

100 Women APW is an innovative fund-raising group, designed to support local charities that are making a difference in Durham Region.
The organization works by bringing together 100+ caring women four times a year to vote for a local cause they’d like to support. Each woman then donates $100 (single) $50 (team of 2) – adding up to an incredible $10,000+ of much-needed funding.
Come as our guest to our next meeting & witness first-hand #ThePowerof100.
