We are so excited to introduce a new free program for young caregivers in HRM!

We've partnered with the Young Caregivers Association to launch the Young Caregivers Pilot, starting Oct. 16, 2024, at St. Andrew's Community Centre.

✏️ Who are young caregivers?
Young caregivers are children and youth who provide care for a family member with a chronic illness, disability, mental health condition or addiction. They face unique challenges balancing school, social life and caregiving duties, so we want to help them.

✏️ About the program
This initiative is a part of Powerhouse - a renowned program developed by Young Caregivers Association in 2003. In two decades it empowered and supported thousands of kids in Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia. This is the first time the program is launched in Nova Scotia.

✏️ What to expect?
This six-week program will support children aged 8-12 in exploring their caregiver identity, building up self-esteem, navigating emotions, developing coping skills and connecting with their peers.

✏️ Registration
You can register now by emailing Kim Henry at [email protected]
Spaces are limited, so early registration is encouraged.

Stay tuned to learn more about information sessions!

First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Health Services Scholarship: Working Together for Indigenous Health Application Opens Soon!

Annual $5,000 scholarship aims to improve health care and services for Indigenous communities across Canada; and is open to Indigenous students across the country, enrolled in a certified, full-time, post-secondary health profession program.

The SE Health First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Health Services Scholarship reflects SE Health’s longtime commitment to collaborating with Indigenous communities across Canada.

As a not-for-profit social enterprise, with a dedicated First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Program Team, committed to acting on the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action, SE Health continues to co-develop programs with Indigenous communities and promote Indigenous-led community health solutions to impact how people live and age at home. Calls to Action 23(i) and 92(ii) focus on supporting and increasing the number of Indigenous healthcare providers and this scholarship supports these recommendations.

Indigenous students face unique challenges and systemic barriers that make obtaining post-secondary education difficult. The scholarship promotes SE’s confidence in students’ abilities to excel in this education and training and strives to reduce the financial hardships that Indigenous students may encounter when looking to obtain health care education, while honoring some of the organization’s team members who have endured similar experiences.

The scholarship opens on August 29th, 2024 and the deadline for submissions is October 30th, 2024.

Each year for the Saint Elizabeth Walk, we see some creative challenges put forth to help raise funds for end-of-life care... but this one is next level!

Every year, Nancy Lefebre participates in the Saint Elizabeth Foundation Walk to support the patients and families served at Journey Home Hospice. This year, Nancy & John Yip, are biking 2,300 kms representing a journey to all SE Health service delivery centres in Ontario, Alberta, and BC (although they did take out the flying distance – there’s only two of them!) We’re asking you to support specialized, person-centred care by donating to JHH and keeping Nancy & John biking!

Nancy kicked off her journey with a 70 km ride this week and will be tracking her progress on social media as she & John peddle for our patients! Let’s make housing affordable for all ages! Finding a safe and affordable place to live shouldn’t be a struggle. The Alliance for a Liveable Ontario has launched the “Five Ways Home” campaign, outlining essential actions governments can take to solve the housing crisis.

Key ideas for more housing options:

️1️⃣ Build in the right places
2️⃣ Build a variety of housing
3️⃣ Build smarter and faster
4️⃣ Invest in non-market housing
5️⃣ Make housing affordable

Recommendations to benefit older adults:

📃 Develop a Comprehensive Seniors Housing Program: Identify and plan for the future housing needs of our aging population.

🏘️ Support Smaller, Accessible Homes: Many older adults wish to downsize and move into more accessible or supportive housing within their communities.

🏙️ Promote Multi-Residential Buildings: Encourage the construction of low-rise and mid-rise buildings that offer a variety of unit sizes and types.
