Doug Ford’s big broken promise on lower hydro rates 13/08/2024

"In 2022 the Financial Accountability Office (FAO) reported that over the next 20 years Ford plans to spend $118 billion subsidizing hydro rates and would not be able to. The 2023 FAO report shows that by the next provincial election in 2026, Ford will have spent $56 billion artificially lowering artificially high hydro rates, never dealing with the problem.

Why would you care about electricity rates? You hit the switch and it’s on. This is the issue no party wants to talk about.

This is the issue that affects everyone including business. Business loves low cost, stability and predictability. For 94 years business in Ontario thrived and was very profitable under the low, stable and predictable rates of public power. Ever since the deregulated electricity market was opened 22 years ago, hydro rates have been unstable, unpredictable and very high for everyone and a very big contributor to the affordability crisis."

Read more from CUPE Ontario Retiree, Paul Kahnert, here:

Doug Ford’s big broken promise on lower hydro rates Doug Ford has promised to lower the cost of hydro electricity, but all he's done is use public money to subsidize the cost of the utility.

CUPE 2361 members – caretaking, landscape services and trades workers at Western University – struggle with an understaffing crisis caused by low wages and high workloads. There are not enough support staff to provide high-quality services in residences, classrooms, offices, labs and washrooms. This situation is unsustainable and we need your support. 🚫‼️

Send a message to Western's administration in support of the workers who keep the campus running. Tell them to negotiate a fair deal that reflects the rising cost of living and substantial gap in wages. ✊🏾📢

Emancipation Day, observed on August 1, commemorates the day in 1834, when the Slavery Abolition Act,1833 came into effect. The law liberated enslaved people in the British colonies, including Canada. And yet it was only in 2021 that Canadian parliament designated August 1 National Emancipation Day.

The abolition of enslavement did not end the struggle for equality and justice for Black people in our country. To this day, the history of enslaved people in Canada is often overlooked and the crucial role that enslaved Africans and their descendants have played in shaping our social and cultural landscapes has yet to be fully recognized.

On August 1 we commit to continuing the work of those who fought for freedom and equality. CUPE Ontario will always work alongside those who will engage in the ongoing struggle toward the eradication of racism and the promotion of equality.

Ontario Council of Hospital Unions - CUPE continues it's demonstrations all over Ontario, staging anti-privatization demonstration at different MPP’s constituency offices in response to government expansion of private, for-profit healthcare services ✊🏾📢🪧

“The Ford government says the status quo isn’t working – but it’s a status quo of their own making,” said Michael Hurley, President of CUPE’s Ontario Council of Hospital Unions (OCHU/CUPE).

“They have been underfunding and starving the public system and dangling privatization as a solution. But privatization is twice as expensive and comes with longer waiting lists. We are calling for real solutions to the hospital crisis, like concrete measures to attract and retain new staff and the addition of new beds.” 🚨🚫

CUPE Ontario extends congratulations and deep appreciation to Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) members, negotiators and leaders on the deal that has been ratified following the union’s strike at the LCBO. 👏🏽✊🏾

The issues at stake in this strike had an impact on all of us across the province. LCBO workers were engaged in a fight not only for better pay and conditions, but in defense of public services, against the forces of privatization, and against the greed and corruption of the Ford Conservatives.

For years, Doug Ford’s Conservatives have severely underfunded health care in Ontario. Health care workers have been critically underpaid and overworked, and are facing exhaustion, stress, and burn out. 🚫 🚨

And while public sector wages have been curbed for more than a decade through a combination of underfunding and legislation, the cost of living has grown so bad that many public sector workers are taking on second jobs, using food banks, or are leaving the jobs they love for better paid work elsewhere.

We need to fix health care in Ontario. ✊🏾

The Health Care Workers’ Coordinating Committee (HCWCC) has launched the Support Our Care petition, aiming to get 60,000 signatures in person by the end of 2024. It’s an ambitious goal, we know. But we need to show the Ontario government that Ontarians support investing in our health care workers and our health care system!

Join us at the upcoming Days of Action that the HCWCC is hosting below and help collect all those petition signatures! All while enjoying food from great vendors! 📢📢

Ontario’s early learning and child care system is in crisis. Across Ontario, the impacts of insufficient funding are being felt by educators, parents and providers.

This is not acceptable. 🚫🚫

We are asking you to stand up with ECEs, child care workers, families and children by sending a message to your MP, MPP, Premier Doug Ford, Ontario’s Minister of Education Todd Smith and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Federal Minister of Children, Families and Social Development Jenna Sudds telling them to work together to ensure that the early learning and child care workforce have decent work and pay and that the non-profit and public child care sectors are stable, thriving and expanding. ✊🏾📢
