As Black alumni, we have endured unspeakable and overt racist incidents during our time at Queen’s and this has left many of us with traumatic scars decades after graduation, with many vowing never to return to the campus

Though we have noted efforts of the University administration towards increased representation and providing spaces and resources for Black students, staff and faculty members to thrive, incidents such as this emphasizes that they have a long way to go.

While the racist incident depicted in the image did not happen on Campus, and the individual ‘becoming a member of Queen’s community has helped her understand the nuances of racism and the world’, we do not believe that leading an organization that states its commitment to equity and social justice is the best course of action.

As we celebrate our history and future this month, we urge the AMS to take appropriate action in honouring their commitment towards equity and anti-racism.

We stand with our student partners and echo their calls in the removal of the candidate from the AMS ballot.

To our fellow student members and partners who may have been deeply affected by this incident, we urge you to seek help from available resources including

- The Black Youth Helpline
- The Peer Support Centre
- BIPOC Talk

We wish you all a safe Black history and future month .

"This is a picture of my late husband, John Brown and some friends at Queen’s. He is the one in the yellowish top and to the far right is the late, Frederick Wade from Bermuda (the airport in Bermuda is named in his honour.

I am Queen’s grad and so is our oldest son, Andrew Brown. He graduated with a degree in Chemistry and Physics and received an award for having the second highest mark in the graduating class but in my mind, he actually had the highest mark 🥰"
