The relationship between parent/caregiver and child is a strong bond that impacts success in life. π§βπ§βπ§π§βπ§βπ§βπ§
During early childhood music classes, parental and caregiver participation contributes to a formula for success! π΅πΉπΌ
With their parents right behind them, children build confidence and self-esteem quicker. By participating in music making together, the positive bond between caregiver and child is reinforced. π€
Yay for our wonderful Bright Young Bells parents!

This season weβve lengthened our session to 8 weeks, running from Sept 7th to Oct 26th. Many parents said the same thing: 4 classes were just not enough! π I am so excited for more music and fun with you all. π
Dartmouth and Halifax will follow soon, I should have my venues confirmed by HRM Rec this week. π€π΅
βMiss K, is there treasure down there?β π΄ββ οΈπ·
I find it equally adorable and funny that 99% of kids look down the bell when I introduce them to the saxophone π That inquisitive nature is so strong in these bright little ones, I just love it! π
I hope everyone is having a wonderful summer! ππΆοΈπ¦π΅πΈ
Iβve been quiet on here, taking some time with family to soak up warm summer vibes, but the music has travelled with us! π₯³
Exciting news: our BEDFORD registration will open up tomorrow (Monday Aug 12th)!! π΅π€ Bedford always fills up FAST so I thought Iβd give you a heads up π. More classes and venues will be added soon!

Executive function spotlight #5:
WORKING MEMORY π©·
π€ WHAT IS IT?
Working memory (a type of short-term memory) is an executive function that plays a BIG role in how we use SMALL amounts of information in our everyday lives. This is in contrast with long-term memory, which is the vast amount of information stored in oneβs lifetime.
We use our working memory when we learn the name of someone new and keep it in mind throughout a conversation π, to remember the 5 things we need to get at the grocery store π, or a quarterback scanning the defense to determine what formation they are in π.
π€ HOW DO WE DO IT?
Any song or rhyme where a previous character, number, or element needs to be kept in mind throughout the song are great working memory boosters. Old MacDonald Had A Farm is a good example, where we need to remember the animals we sang about previously in order to make the farm animal sounds in the correct order (another such example is Sheβll Be Cominβ Round the Mountain). In the song Five Little Monkeys kids need to keep in mind how many monkeys are left with each repeating verse. π
Action songs are also great for strengthening working memory: children need to pay attention to the words and actions, remember them, and use them at the correct time. πΆ
βΊοΈ WHY DO WE NEED IT?
Working memory plays a key role in your childβs ability to learn effectively. π§ People with a weak working memory will have difficulty with complex reasoning, trouble executing tasks that have more than one step, and lose track of what theyβre busy with or what they are supposed to do. πΆ

Letβs Have Music, Letβs Have Fun! π§‘π©΅π©·ππ
A study conducted at the University of ZΓΌrich in January 2021 and published in The Journal of Neuroscience studied the brains of both musicians and non-musicians. πΆπ§
A summary of the research explains that
βmusiciansβ brains were vastly more STRUCTURALLY and FUNCTIONALLY connected than non-musicians, especially in areas of the brain responsible for speech and sound π£ (especially the auditory cortices of both hemispheres). The musical group also showed STRONGER connections from the auditory cortices to other brain areas in the frontal, parietal, and temporal cortex π§ known to be involved in the control of higher cognitive functions like WORKING MEMORY, PROBLEM SOLVING and other executive functions.β
Once again the studies show us that
MUSIC kids are SMART kids! πΆπ₯³π§

DID YOU KNOWβ
Holding and playing musical instruments like shakers, maracas, mallets and tambourines STRENGTHEN the same hand muscles needed for turning pages, holding a hockey stick, manouvering a toothbrush, and develops super duper hand-eye coordination! πͺπ§ π
πΆ INSTRUMENT OF THE WEEK πΆ
π©΅ The Glockenspiel π§‘
βGlockenspielβ is a German word that translates to:
Glocke = Bells
Spiel = Play
Letβs play the bells! π€
We had so much fun exploring the π bright sound π the Glockenspiel makes, and learning that BIG staves produce a LOW sound π and small staves produce a high sound π¦.
Executive function spotlight #2:
COGNITIVE FLEXIBILITY π©·
π€ WHAT IS IT?
Cognitive flexibility refers to the ability to think about multiple things at the same time, and to modify our thinking based on a change in environmental modifications or alterations.
Does your child become stuck thinking about topics in only one way? Do they struggle to βswitchβ their approach and use a different problem-solving strategy? Is it challenging for them to do something differently than how they normally do it?
Music is there to help! πΆ
π€ HOW DO WE DO IT?
Through music we can explore themes from different perspectives, stretching those cognitive functions! For example, through pretend play we can sort a group of animals by size, colour, speed, habitat or diet. π©ππ»ββοΈ Also, through songs we activate many cognitive functions simultaneously: clapping the beat, singing the lyrics, and responding to new instructions all at the same time.
βΊοΈ WHY DO WE NEED IT?
Musical multi-tasking has been proven through multiple studies to enhance cognitive function. Cognitive flexibility gives us the ability to look at situations from multiple perspectives, and to find alternative solutions to problems. π§ πͺ

Executive function spotlight #1:
SUSTAINED ATTENTION π
π€ WHAT IS IT?
Sustained attention involves the ability to maintain oneβs focus and attention on an activity or stimulus in the presence of distractions or other activities. It is what makes it possible to concentrate on an activity for as long as it takes to finish, even if there are other distracting stimuli present.
π€ HOW DO WE DO IT?
There are many elements in music that naturally pull in cognitive processes and improve sustained attention. One example is by incorporating songs where children have to pay attention to what comes next, and doing substitution activities (for example, βMary had a little gooseβ instead of a little lamb, or βSkip to my Louβ but substituting βskipβ with other movements).
βΊοΈ WHY DO WE NEED IT?
This important cognitive skill helps us efficiently and successfully carry out tasks and activities in our daily lives, especially those that take a longer time to complete.
π§ EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONING πΉ
Those who have attended any of my classes, will know that I love to talk. π―οΈ And one of the things I love to talk about most, is executive functioning! π
But, the kids would much prefer that I sing, play, or pretend to be a humongous dinosaur with them instead of hearing how incredible music is for their developing brainsβ¦ π So Iβll tell you all about executive functioning here on my socials! π±
Iβll post about each executive function strengthened by music in seperate posts throughout the week. Keep an eye out for them! πΆ
π° HAPPY EASTER! π°
