March On Canada - Calgary
March On Canada - Calgary On January 21st, 2017, all across Canada, we marched together in solidarity with Sister Marches around the world. Please join us.
Today, in Canada, we March On. We have a new name but we’re the same people. We are the people in your communities who led in January and we are moving forward together now. We have an opportunity to create a grassroots Canadian organization with a uniquely Canadian voice and Canadian leadership. We’ll focus on Canadian issues and priorities.
The UCP curriculum is only going to become much worse under this premier who promises to alienate and divide us further.

This is a growing movement. They want the freedom of ignoring science, laws and logic, but they don't want the same kinds of freedom that most people do.

The ‘Freedom Convoy’ is Turning Into a Christian Nationalist Revival Movement Convoy-related groups are looking more and more like a Christian Evangelical 'revival' movement
What with Danielle Smith and other UCP hopefuls promising us plenty with their separatism schemes, we want you to consider this and resist their bad idea.

The UCP are demanding that all staff for this online university pick up and move to the town of Athabasca, even though their students are not in this town. Worse still, there aren't enough empty residences to house them.

On National Indigenous Peoples Day, we celebrate and honour the unique cultures of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples.
Here in Calgary, the area where the Bow and Elbow rivers converge holds special significance. It's a place of confluence where the sharing of ideas and opportunities naturally comes together. It is in that spirit that we recognize the important contributions Indigenous peoples have made in shaping our city, from its founding, right up to today.
Your voices continue to be important as we come together in the spirit of reconciliation and a stronger future for all. Please continue the important work of keeping your diverse and rich cultures alive. I wish you all an amazing day and look forward to working with all of you as we write our collective story together.

This is copied from a local activist, on the morning of Calgary's reproductive rights rally. It's so passionate and articulate, I asked her for permission to share.
"Today’s the day, friends. High noon. Olympic Plaza.
And today it’s the YYC Pro-choice Rally for Reproductive Justice. But this is different. Pro-choice advocacy has always been my Big Issue. I was 15 years old when Canada decriminalized abortion in 1988. About a year later there was a high-profile case in Quebec where a man sued his girlfriend ”for the right of his child to live” — she wanted to terminate an unplanned pregnancy, he didn’t want her to, and the man tried to tie her up in legal processes “until it was too late”. One weekend during the trial she drove down to the US, got an abortion, and came back: 🖕🏼🖕🏼
I was told by the person I was sleeping with at the time that if I ever got pregnant with his baby, he’d do exactly the same to me, but he’d MAKE SURE I couldn’t “sneak off” to get an abortion. It was a chilling, terrifying, thousand-year moment. My feminist warrior origin story snapped into view right there: You would kidnap my future, from the inside, and force it out, on a leash? Even threaten to? …Oh, it is ON.
And that smirking, ugly, power-over energy is still in the world, even 30+ years later. It’s in the bald “how *dare* you question what I’m owed” that we all saw on Brett Kavanagh’s face during the SCOTUS confirmation hearings in 2018. It’s in the firefighter in NYC heckling the pro-choice demonstrators from the fire hall steps, “You lost! Your body is mine!” just last week. There is literally nothing more repulsive.
Our bodies are OURS. We are not incubators and we are not cattle and we are not property. If you are a forced birther you better have had a vasectomy. You better have adopted children and foster kids. You better not be wearing glasses, treating any STDs, or taking any b***r pills. You better be devoting your life to ending domestic violence, diverting funding from War Rooms to schools, you better be in favour of universal free childcare and UBI and free transit. You better be yelling for equal pay for equal work, you better be mentoring women and training them for free and never taking any credit. You better be in favour of nonconsensual organ donation. And why? Because f**k you, that’s why.
And by the way, don’t let anyone conflate pro-choice body autonomy with pandemic public safety mandates. You don’t like vaccines? Don’t have them. Nobody’s making you. Are there consequences for that choice? Maybe, sometimes; it depends on the ghouls running your particular jurisdiction. But if you’re willing to block border crossings, terrorize the capital’s city centre for a month, and cost Canada billions of dollars in policing, infrastructure repair, healthcare impacts, and international trade — for the INCONVENIENCE of *temporarily* wearing a mask SOMETIMES? Well guess what, I have some information for you about pregnancy and gestation, labour and delivery, and the physical, economic, emotional, and interpersonal impact of child-rearing on women. It’s just. not. comparable., “bro”.
I hate that this isn’t over. I hate that they WILL overturn Roe in the US. I hate that the conservative government in Alberta and beyond WILL use this as inspiration to come for women’s reproductive medical care. Outlawing abortion doesn’t lower abortion rates. It just outlaws SAFE abortion. Women and femmes and trans men and uterus-having folk will die.
I could go on and on. I’m trying to limit it to Twitter, where my account # # is now just nonstop abortion access retweets. But this will not stand. Calgary has a sh*tty record of coming out to protests. The women and good humans of this city and province need to shake out the cobwebs and show the f**k up. This is literally —literally— life and death. Bad things happen when “good” people stay silent. DO NOT STAY SILENT ON THIS."

CALGARY PRO-CHOICE RALLY FOR ABORTION JUSTICE
Stop abortion at the source: vasectomies are reversible. Make every young man have one. ...What's that, Buttercup? Did the idea of regulating a man's body make you uncomfortable? Oh.
The Alberta UCP government has a long record of disregarding the will of Albertans and imposing a Christofacist agenda on the province despite public action, protest, and negative feedback. Jason Kenney began his political career as a proud and unapologetic anti-abortion activist. The Premier of Alberta and his caucus have spent the last week dodging questions in the Legislature as to whether they will protect reproductive freedom for Albertans. The UN special rapporteur on the right to health reported this week: "We know that politically, what happens in the United States does have an impact on precedents elsewhere in the world." Albertan women, femmes, and uterus-having folk WILL NOT allow this province to tell us what our bodies are for.
The abortion "issue" has never been about babies, or "pro-life". It's about upholding white supremacy and the patriarchy. Trans folks, non-binary people, the genderfluid among us and other people who have uteruses must have equal rights to appropriate health care. It is the responsibility of Women's March and all feminists to fight for human rights. THIS FIGHT IS ALL OF US OR NONE OF US.
Calgarians and Canadians stand with the majority of Americans and people around the world who agree that reproductive freedom is a human and civil rights issue.
We rally for FREE ABORTIONS ON DEMAND, FOR ANY REASON AND NO REASON, WITHOUT APOLOGY.
We also need to vote wisely.
It could happen here too. It's already happening here.
