When I first moved to BC nearly 25 years ago, giant moonsnails could be found in great numbers on many of the beaches here. Over the years I have noticed their numbers decrease. This morning, on my walk across this beach that seems to reach for infinity, I wondered if this could be partly caused by so many of us collecting their discarded shells for our windowsills, could it be that by taking the shells home we are removing the raw ingredients needed to form new ones from the ocean? Still, selfishly I hoped to find one for myself, to take home and maybe keep the salty fresh sunlight feeling of this moment alive just a little but longer. And I did find one. But this one was alive. And the joy I instantly felt caught me off guard, to find one living, making her way slowly, peacefully across the expanse of Rathtrevor beach, felt like a miracle far more vibrant than finding a shell to decorate my toilet with.
