The first round of play at the 2024 Royal LePage Amateur Provincial Championship has come to a conclusion after a beautiful first day at the Humber Valley Resort.

Newfoundland and Labrador’s top players gathered at Humber Valley for an uncommon 144 player full field event. Day one was a hot one with low winds and great conditions. The resort showed its teeth on day one and proved to be the ultimate test of golf.

In the Men’s Amateur division, scoring was tough to come by on Monday morning as the course claimed many of the province’s top golfers. Ryan Holwell of Bally Haly Country Club in St. John’s claimed an early lead after an opening round 3-over par 75, he will be accompanied in the final group on Tuesday by Harmon Seaside Links Ryan Lamswood who fired an opening round of 4-over 76, Grant Lane of Bally Haly who matched Lamswood’s 76 and Ethan Efford, also of Bally Haly who posted a 5-over par 77.

The Men’s Mid-Am division which is contested by amateur aged golfers who are over 25 years of age was also a tightly contested division with some familiar names on the board. Grant Lane of Bally Haly posted a 4-over 76 to take a one stroke lead over fellow clubmate Jaron Flynn who came in with a 5-over 77. The 2023 Mid-Amateur Champion Mitch Normore of Tamarack Golf Club took his spot in the third position with a 6-over 78.

The Men’s Senior division saw Gander Golf Club being represented with Chris Hoyles posting an impressive 3-over 75, Hoyles will hold a two-stroke advantage over a pair from Bally Haly Country Club. Colin Budgell and Howie Hansford shot a matching pair of 5-over 77’s to keep in contention going into the final two rounds.

The Men’s Super Senior seen some familiar names from the Senior division with Colin Budgell and Howie Hansford firing equal rounds of 5-over 77s to share the lead in the 65 plus aged division, both players are of Bally Haly Country Club. Alan Masters stands one stroke back of the lead after a 6-over 78 at his home course the Humber Valley Resort.

On the Ladies amateur side, Bally Haly’s Freya Snook – fresh off her second junior provincial championship opened a five-stroke lead with a 9-over 81. She leads Taylor Cormier and Paige Allen, both of Humber Valley who fired matching rounds of 14-over 86. The girls will battle it out again tomorrow with the privilege to play together.

In the Ladies Mid-Amateur division, Jennifer Piercey of Bally Haly Country Club fired a 94 to hold a 7 stroke over fellow clubmate Tracy O’Shea who fired a 101 to put herself in striking distance of the lead. Lorraine Coleman of The Wilds sits in third place just one stroke back of O’Shea for second.

The Ladies Senior division is in control of Kathleen Jean of Harmon Seaside Links, Kathleen fired a 7-over par 79 today to take a six-stroke lead over Bally Haly Country Club’s Janet Mills who signed for a 13-over 85 on day one. There is a two-way tie for third place with Bally Haly’s Karen Healey and Humber Valley Resort’s Kelly Hogan both posting a 92.

In a unique situation, there is an almost exact leaderboard between the Senior division and the Super Senior division. Kathleen Jean grabbed a six-stroke lead over Janet Mills with her opening round 79. Kelly Hogan of Humber Valley claims solo third going into the final day of competition in the Super Senior division.

Join us to ring in the New Year with live music featuring Dave McHugh. Dave plays a variety of classic rock, country, top hits and Newfoundland music, he is a well-known musician with a great stage presence, he is sure to keep the dance floor full all night long.

The clubhouse will be elegantly decorated, and NYE party favors will be provided. A huge selection of food will be served all night, along with Prosecco for a toast at midnight. Doors will open at 8:00pm and live music will begin at 9:00pm.

Humber Valley Resort is delighted to announce the appointment of Wayne Allen as our new Head Professional. Wayne will be joining the resort and establishing a golf academy to provide a variety of coaching for juniors, adults & group lessons.

As a PGA member, Wayne comes to us with extensive experience in the golf industry, having played competitively in Europe before focusing on coaching. He has worked as a golf professional in England, Scotland, Egypt and Trinidad & Tobago before moving to Canada in 2003 where has since won numerous coaching awards from Golf Canada and the PGA of Canada.

“I’m very excited to be joining the resort” said Allen. “It is a world class facility and will enable me to establish a first class academy to promote the development of future talent through junior golf and provide a service to members and guests”.

Ladies Day is always a bunch of fun at Humber Valley Resort. We’d like to thank everyone who took part on Tuesdays each week. Our ladies enjoyed a beautiful day of fall golf and their annual Tombstone tournament last week to cap off the 2023 season.
