Toronto-based social venture installing solar-powered irrigation systems in South Sudan to address hunger, poverty & conflict. Build dignity drop by drop.
In South Sudan, the world’s youngest country, war and climatic changes including drought and flooding have increased food insecurity to the level of an acute humanitarian crisis. In early 2017, famine affecting 40% of the population was declared by the United Nations, and will affect the people for years to come. Sustainable, long-term solutions that give ownership to the local population are requ
ired. The Rainmaker Enterprise aims to achieve this goal by installing solar-powered drip irrigation systems that allow communities in South Sudan to engage in a circle of sustainable agricultural practices and income-earning. As such, the Rainmaker Enterprise seeks to address food insecurity and inter-communal conflicts over scarce resources. The Rainmaker Enterprise is an award-winning social venture founded by James Thuch Madhier, a South Sudanese student at the University of Toronto in Canada. The initiative is driven by the South Sudanese diaspora and the local population in partner communities, with the support of people of goodwill from around the world.
