One of the things that I love capturing at births is all the little in betweens that often get missed by the birther while they’re busy focusing inwards. The care and concern on your support peoples faces, the worry, the love, the holding space.

But also all the quiet work that goes into supporting the birth that you want. The quick changes of cool cloths, refilling of drinks, snack gathering, boiling of water and refilling of pools. Every little touch designed to take one more thing off the birthing person’s plate and I love it.

Hip Squeezes for days!

Many birthers find that strong counter pressure either in from their hips or directly on the back provides a surprising amount of relief from contraction pain. Back pain is usually thought of as being a result of a posterior baby- but it’s often not! Some birthers just find that’s where they feel the pressure regardless of how babe is positioned (it’s me, I’m some birthers).

If contractions and back pain are feeling intense, try this trick as the contraction builds to see if you get any relief. Most people seem to love one and hate the other, so be willing to try both!

They start out teeny tiny and before you know it, grow into tall, sassy, outgoing tweens. Time really doesn’t stop. And these memories are the ones that get you through.

Going all stage mom again today with my oldest who gets to perform Newsies Jr. both can’t wait, and am in complete denial that she’s old enough to do all this. When did she go and become a while person?

Had a wonderful birthy meeting this morning with some fabulous perinatal professionals and just feeling all the warm fuzzies about the many hands that touch each family to create a positive experiences.

I’m so grateful for all the connections I’ve gotten to make in this city, and how supportive our community is. I know this isn’t true in every city or every niche, but I’m glad it is for us!

I adore the birth centre ❤️ while the right team can make any birth space amazing for you, the spaces at Odeimin are just set up so well for birth. With easy access to both shower and tub, a large bed to snuggle up on, and room to move around as desired, being at the birth centre is truly a blessing!

Spring finally feels like it’s somewhat in the air, and I am absolutely here for this. I really struggle with winter, but can’t bring myself to leave Winnipeg either. It’s a problem.

It’s been a rough morning over here (Mondayest Tuesday ever) so let’s take a second to remember joy and love and happiness. ❤️

Don’t begrudge yourself rest.

It’s cliche but labour truly is a marathon and not a sprint. If you can, try to rest or even doze in between contractions. You’d be amazed by how much of a perkup even a 20 minute interrupted nap can be.

Were you able to sleep at all during labour? With my first I was falling asleep in between contractions while pushing. I needed that energy boost SO badly!

Hi, it’s me! Anyone else stressing about parks Canada reservations this morning?

If you’ve reached out in the last little bit you know that my summer schedule has been a bit up in the air while we plan our family summer. Planning for vacations is the hardest thing as a birth worker because it’s not just a few days you need to take off - one week vacation often means taking essentially a 6 week break! It’s not for the faint of heart, but these off call times dedicated to family are so important to us.

After today I will be reaching out to those in my “pending” box letting you know if I’m any closer to summer clarity. Thanks for being so patient with me!

And as we said yesterday, birth is most often about those storytelling and calm, in between moments. They’re both gorgeous in my eyes. I see so much strength and trust in the quiet. The big wow moments stick in your memory for sure, but the work and love being put in during labour tends to be what I look back at years from now to remind myself of how strong I am.

That first deep breath when it’s all over and they’re finally in your arms. When your brain catches up with your body and the world just pauses for a moment.

The announcements!

Some people are reaching for their phone within a few minutes to alert family and friends to share in the joy, others savour those first hours alone. Some have visitors right away to meet babe and others settle in as a trio first before inviting others to join.
